Keet track of participations on Google Meets

January 15, 2024 How my homework became a side project

While taking a software development class, one project consisted of partially remaking the system that the professors used to keep track of our participation in class. This system was relatively complex for what usually is required when taking attendance by hand. In fact, two people were required to efficiently use this application, since the professor was busy teaching classes and might take too long or even forget about adding the participation. Then an assistance could focus on exclusively adding the participation.

However, the advantage of automatizing the results and making them digital made the effort worth it.

Once the project was done and submitted, the professor asked an open question "What could you do to improve this application". My initial thought was to add a button on the screen so the professor could easily keep track of the participation. Several iterations of the same idea later, I finished building Meet Participant's Manager, a portable extension for google chrome that can ease the task of registering participation. Unlike desktop applications, this app is integrated with Google Meets, completely skipping the process of manually adding the students, configuring the information for each class, or even selecting students to add the participation.

After a year of having this as one of my side projects, I could finally release the first estable version.
