I started building memo.fm in public 31 days ago and yesterday someone upgraded to the paid plan for the first time

I'm not sure they're even using it for a podcast, but I reached out to try find out. I'm still not sure memo.fm will become a viable business, but someone paying for it this early on is a great start!

First paying customers are always worth celebrating in my pov. There's so much to learn from them. Congrats!

I just checked this out and realized its something I could use for my community. Trying to figure out how it might work if I could insert the link into my weekly newsletters for community members to answer specific questions or provide audio content. I have been soliciting them for audio content and this could make it easier. Any ideas on how to do that with memo? I don't have a podcast.

      Thanks!

This could totally work outside of a podcast setting, you can create your memo.fm link and people can go to it to leave you voice messages.

There have been some non-podcasters using memo.fm and I'm confused as to why to be honest. When you say that you've been soliciting community members for audio content, why not text or video? Why audio?

My community is offline and they add content to shared physical diaries. I solicit audio content because sometimes they just want to express themselves and share stories using a different medium than text or video. The audio content is useful for sharing in so many different ways too.

I don't have a podcast, but just checked out your site - very cool! Styling is definitely nicer than SpeakPipe (which I'd also never heard of).
I could see this being really useful / cool for customer service (that thought is what prompted me to check it out, as a non-podcaster about to launch a web app.)
If I were you, I'd explore that use-case... I wonder if you could even (somehow - I have no idea how) integrate with some of the popular customer service platforms like Intercom, Crisp, Zendesk, Helpscout, etc.

edited to add: I just checked out your profile, and it looks like you have a knack for building things that could be helpful for customer support use cases - ha!

Hahaha that's quite funny - Screenjar wasn't intended for customer service initially either!

Why do you think audio messages would be helpful for customer service? I understand why video would be good, but I'm not sure I see why audio would make sense in a customer support context

        sorry for the slow response.

I just think of it as lowering the bar / making it as easy as possible for people to share feedback or ask for help. Sometimes video/screen recording is really best, but (for some customers, at least), that can feel like a big ask.

Even requiring someone to compose an email to get help is increasingly a "big" ask -- that's part of why chat solutions are good, because they lower the activation energy required to reach out. (Not only are they right there in front of the customer, but also they don't require "composing" an email -- you don't have to write in full sentences, etc. - it's more like having a conversation.)

To me, an audio solution could be incorporated into that customer service toolkit -- "hey look - you don't even have to type - just click this one button, tell us what the problem is, and we'll get back to you" -- it feels potentially more efficient than a chat session, IMO, and that would be my desire as a customer -- please solve my problem with as little time and effort on my side as possible.

July 19, 2021 Launched on Product Hunt

27 days after I started building memo.fm in public, it's live on Product Hunt (https://www.producthunt.com/posts/memo-fm)

Slow start, but I'm hoping to et a few more upvotes to end the day at least a little bit higher on the homepage.

I've launched over 5 products on Product Hunt and still have no clue why some do way better than others!

Building in public on Twitter meant that a few people were aware of memo.fm it existed

Thanks to some friends retweeting and sharing what I was working on, a podcaster heard of memo.fm and decided to try it out right away.

Pretty happy with how quick it was for someone to find memo.fm and try it out (https://twitter.com/LouiseShanahan_/status/1412703026947801092)

This is so cool and useful for podcasters @Ramy. I will feature Memo on the next edition of the Podmmunity newsletter.

June 22, 2021 Started building in public

I've had this on my "idea list" for a while and wanted to try building something in public.

I'm a big podcast fan and this project is tiny in scope, so I figured there was no reason not to try build it in public.

I've been Tweeting progress here:

I listen to a lot of podcasts and quite a few ask for listener questions. Most ask you to call a number to leave a voicemail, but that can cost a lot depending on where you're calling from. This is a better alternative.
