Hey Indie Hackers! 👋
I wanted to share the story and lessons behind my latest iOS project: Minimo Survival Kit — a 100% offline outdoor and emergency toolkit.

💡 The Problem: Why Outdoor & Utility Apps Are Broken
Whenever I go hiking, camping, or travel off-grid, cellular reception is usually the first thing to disappear. At the same time, battery life becomes the single most critical resource.
When searching for outdoor utilities on the App Store, I noticed a frustrating pattern:
1. App Fragmentation: You need one app for barometric pressure, another for knot guides, another for compass bearings, another for solunar cycles, and another for first-aid references.
2. Heavy Battery Drain: Most apps run aggressive background tracking or unoptimized GPS loops that drain a phone battery in a few hours.
3. Cloud Bloat & Paywalls: Too many simple utility apps require mandatory account sign-ups, internet connections to load assets, and $40/year recurring subscriptions just to look at a compass or knot chart.
Your iPhone already has incredible hardware built into it — barometric pressure sensors, magnetometers, accelerometers, and GPS. I wanted to build a single, unified "digital Swiss Army knife" that unlocks this hardware with zero bloat.

🛠️ What We Built
Minimo Survival Kit consolidates the essential off-grid utilities into a clean, battery-efficient interface:
• 🌦️ Barometer & Storm Glass: Real-time atmospheric pressure trend monitoring to predict weather shifts without needing a forecast feed.
• 🪢 Step-by-Step Knot Guides & Offline First Aid: Fully illustrated guides that load instantly in airplane mode.
• 🚨 Emergency SOS & Morse Transmitter: High-visibility screen beacons and automated Morse strobe for search & rescue signaling.
• 🧭 Wayfinder, Altimeter & Anchor Bearing: Low-power sensor polling for directional navigation without battery slaughter.
• ☀️ Solunar & Ephemeris Tracker: Twilight, golden hour, and moon phases computed entirely via local mathematical formulas.

⚡ Architectural & Business Takeaways
1. Local-First = $0 Marginal Server Costs:
Because the app runs 100% locally on device hardware, there are no API bills, no cloud database costs, and zero backend maintenance. Every dollar earned goes straight to the bottom line.
2. Privacy as a Feature:
We have zero telemetry, no third-party ad SDKs, and no tracking cookies. For outdoor and privacy-conscious users, this has been a huge selling point.
3. Monetization Philosophy:
Instead of locking basic safety tools behind a predatory monthly recurring fee, we use a fair hybrid model (a generous free tier + one-time Lifetime unlock / optional yearly support).
