Doubling down...

Okay, 8 months of this as a freelance/agency business has failed. But today I've decided I'm going to make it work as a Saas.

I'm giving myself 100 days, until 5th May 2023, to get to $1K MRR. That's 25 customers @ $40/mth.

My first action will be to write the docs. This will help me to better understand what features and layouts need to be built in to the application.

Then I'll be designing the application, based on the docs. Before building a beautiful landing page to show it off.

This will take time. I'm beginning to understand that that's the reality of doing good things. But I will do it as quickly as I can. I give myself two weeks.

From a marketing perspective, I'm going to be posting a lot of content to demonstrate what I'm doing, and why I'm doing it. I'm going to be speaking to as many people as possible about what I'm doing. And, I'm going to form some sort of community – likely a newsletter plus, maybe, Facebook.

Why did the freelancer "thing" fail? what happened during those 8 months?

In the first month I got my first client. Built and launched a new website for them which they are happy with and has produced great results. Meanwhile, I was cold calling trying to get a second client. I wasn't good at this, and eventually gave up. At this point I moved away from dentists for a while and starting working for other types of clients with far greater success.

Then, my first dental client posted a testimonial in a Facebook group for dentists, and I started getting a few enquiries, and eventually two more clients. This took me to about $400 MRR.

The thing that stood out to me at this point was that I was effectively providing the same service to each client – a simple, well-designed, performant website. Yes, copy, images and colours differentiated them, but the things that were really taking me a long time – setting up a CMS, coding the site – were very repeatable.

Being really honest with myself though, the thing that caused me to fail previously was my inability to market and sell. And this remains my greatest weakness.

Thanks for replying. In the end, it doesn't matter how good is what you sell if you cannot market it properly... I have suffered from this too for many years, there are no shortcuts, it is just a matter of putting in the effort and long hours.
