November 9, 2023 Feedback, V15 and companies

It is great to receive feedback from users and it make me feel that what I am doing is having a good impact on other people.

This is why the next release of Mockreate includes one of our users suggestions: Companies.

In this update, you'll be able to generate random company names for your designs.
You can get the plugin from the Figma community store:

October 24, 2023 More improvements

We had a really good launch on ProductHunt with 54 upvotes.
Probably might be not too much for many of you but is among one of the highest I have ever received.

We also received some really good feedback which I started implementing right away.
One of these was adding more variance around phone numbers, like different formats and templates based around countries.

I have also recorded a quick loom demo to show people the new implementation which was well received.

October 5, 2023 Mockreate AI

A new version of Mockreate is finally out!
I decided to rename it to Mockreate AI since I am using ChatGPT to generate the data in this new version and it now works better than ever.

The code changes required were less complex than I initially expected and I was able to ship the update much faster than initially thought.

I have been testing the plugin with some designer friends and they are really happy with the result.

I am a still bummed by that 1 star review I got but I guess it'll be smooth out with new ones.

Next up, I am planning to relaunch on ProductHunt just to get some more people on board and push for new reviews.

I have been thinking to add some new datasets and or improve the existing ones, so I'm going to put some thoughts into that in the upcoming days.

September 30, 2023 A new direction

I wasn't planning on making any major update to Mockreate, but after collecting a few user feedback it seems that a few things should be improved.

Right now the way Mockreate works is that you select a category of data you want to generate random text and then the plugin creates the text for you in your Figma file.
As one user pointed out "I would like to randomize existing text"...so I'm back to work.

I have made some drastic changes to the code base and started using ChatGPT to generate the random stuff that is going to be used.

Once the update will be live users will be able to select existing text and randomise it.
Pretty useful if you work with tables or lots of data you want to easily change to make it look real.

I have also received other comments regarding new features which I'm going to implement next :)

May 15, 2023 Over 1 year of Mockreate and over 1k users

I wanted to start writing a bit more about Mockreate, a simple and free plugin for Figma that as of today has 1246 users.
The initial idea was really simple and I couldn't find anything similar.
It was also a period at work where I had to create UIs with tons of random data to display the interfaces like they were used by actual users.

Enter Mockreate!
The plugin took a few weeks to develop, especially because it was my first attempt to use the Figma API to develop a plugin so I had to get used.
All the data in use is pre-generated randomly and served on request, so I don't have to use any other API or rely on chatGPT which would make the product paid.

I published the plugin after a few days thinking it would not get much traction, but to my surprise, it's being used by quite some people now and it has been so far, in my career as an indie hacker, the most used product I have ever created.

I am planning to add more random data to Mockreate in the future and I am collecting users feedback to improve the plugin even more.

About

I created Mockreate because I was looking for a way to quickly populate my Figma designs with randomly generated names, emails, digits and more.
