Momentum Dashboard
Productivity browser extension.
During the opening conversation of the show, Howard digressed into a rant about how complicated technology is today, and specifically mentioned Momentum as an experience he enjoyed in the midst of the usual chaos he experiences dealing with technology.
In episode #61 of the Tim Ferriss Show podcast, Tim and guest Matt Mullenweg (creator of WordPress) discussed the value Momentum Dash had added to their schedules and workflows:
“The photos are absolutely stunning, which catches your attention. The reason that’s important is each day it will prompt you to type an answer for, ‘What is your focus for Today?’ Then it will display that every time you open a New Tab. If I open a Tab to do something unimportant, trivial or just that is a pure distraction, I’ll be like, ‘Oh yeah, I should really get back to that’.”
— Tim Ferriss
“It's kind of a clean, fun thing that when you launch a tab—because by default on Chrome I feel like before it was your most frequently visited sites, which is distraction central for me, so I'd be launching a new tab and then 20 minutes later you're like, ‘what am I doing?’ [...] The road to heck is paved with lots of new tabs.”
— Matt Mullenweg

With 300,000 users already since our October 2013 launch, Momentum was featured as the #2 Product of the Day, #4 Product of the Week, and #4 Product of the Month on Product Hunt.
All the positive feedback we received in the PH comments, combined with our own user feedback, continued to signal we were evolving the product in the right direciton.

After coding an early draft 6 months prior, we cleaned up the code and launched the extension on the Google Web Store. Within 3 months, we had 300,000 users.
The first version only had weather, to-do, clock, and focus widgets, but those were enough to communicate the appeal right away.

Pretty crazy numbers on the Chrome Web Store. Did you guys do any optimizations in order to rank higher?

We had very low expectations of what might happen when we put it up on the Chrome store, so it was a perpetual state of shock at the rate we were accruing users over those first few months. We had much bigger problems with scaling to meet demand than to worry about ranking optimizations at that point.

That's pretty crazy. Heard similar things about other stores as well (non-browser-related). Maybe going on the Firefox/Opera/other-browser-based stores will have the same result for you as well.

We wanted a tool that created a restful 'home' to feel calm while still productivity-oriented throughout the day.
