Monoboard

I sat down to make a dashboard in Notion. I already had the databases. Tasks, projects, clients. The numbers were in there. I thought I was ten minutes from a page the team could look at.

Then I opened a blank page.

Building a dashboard in Notion is not hard because you are stupid. It is hard because the tool asks you to become a Notion person before it will show you your own work.

Every view wants a decision. Which database. Which properties. Which filter. A rollup that looks right until you put it on a chart and the chart goes empty, because the answer you actually need lives across two tables. You spend the afternoon building the dashboard instead of looking at the week.

Then you finish it. You feel smart for a day. A week later it is already wrong, because nobody is maintaining it. The data was fine. The dashboard was a second job.

That is the part people do not put in the reviews. They say “steep learning curve.” What they mean is: I opened the page, I froze, and I left.

I do not want to decorate Notion. I do not want a prettier construction kit. I want to see what is going on.

A team should have one shared view of the things that matter. That view should use the databases you already run. It should stay true without someone babysitting it. You should be able to share it without handing over the whole workspace. And it should be simple enough to survive the week. If only one person understands how it was built, it is already dead.

I just wanted to see the work. Notion made me build a dashboard first. So I am building the thing I wished was there.
