Moonlight Game Devs
Community where Game Devs share their stories and advice.
Exactly two months since posting my first video, I hit the 100th subscriber for my channel (only contains the podcast episodes so far). It feels great, especially since I was able to double from 50 subs to 100 in less than 20 days. I attribute this to these changes I made (hope these help others):
- Adding a short hook snippet from the episode to the beginning, conveying to the listener why they should stay to listen to the whole thing
- Editing even more to ensure that the episode is high quality and content packed, instead of filler
- Improving the thumbnails
I am hoping to do more content than the weekly podcast show! I am getting a camera soon and will be looking to do some game development "logs" where I showcase progress and work on a game I am making - I see these types of videos actually getting a pretty big number of views! Thanks for reading and hope to have more good news to report soon.
I know it's not a lot, but I enjoy seeing the steady and noticeable increase in followers for the content. The podcast has been out for about 1 and a half months, racking up a total of about 2500 plays on YouTube. The funny thing is that I am not even really tracking my success on actual podcasting platforms...
I also broke a new weekly page click record at 700 sessions, which I am pretty happy with. Overall, a decent week and I feel very happy with how things have gone so far!

After seeing some slow but noticeable growth in YouTube and Email List subscribers, I decided to take the next step and add a feature: a curated list of free game asset packs across the various vendors (Itch, Unreal Store, Unity, etc.). In Startup Land, there are many curated Lists, but in Game Development there really are not that many! I posted the list and got 150+ upvotes on the Free Assets subreddit, broke the personal "number of sessions" record, help from the community on how to improve the website, and just cracked 30 newsletter subscribers - a small victory that just feels awesome! Bit over a month later, after starting on the website, I have launched my podcast on all major podcast platforms and YouTube. I'm really happy with how the interviews went and think that they will provide a lot of value to anyone looking to start their own games business. If you want to check it out, you can view them on my YouTube channel:

To have something to show for my initial guests, I started building the website using a Gatsby template. This saved me a lot of time and I'm really happy with the result.
I also got my logo done on Fiverr, to get the initial branding for the podcast out of the way.

I was working on my own game part-time, which I ended up abandoning and turning into an asset pack. It was at that time that I was looking for some motivational content of games company founders (especially those moonlighting their games like me) and realized that I was probably not the only one.
I found that podcasts were the best medium for this type of content, but that a complementary blog can help with SEO and satisfying listeners who want more content.

When I was moonlighting my own indie game, I was struggling to find quality content on how I could succeed. I was looking for a podcast or website where game devs could listen to the stories and lessons of others.
