We got to #2 of the week on Product Hunt!

https://www.producthunt.com/posts/motion-pro

Stats on PH: I think this week was relatively less-competitive on PH due to the holidays; we also got slightly less website traffic/signups with around the same number of upvotes (compared to our previous launch) - this time we got around 1,300 unique visitors on the day of launch, and a total of 1,000 more in the 4 days following.

We've been able to get to #1 on PH twice in the last 8 months. What we learned to be the most important thing is getting as many quality votes as possible as early as possible - earlier votes have a compounding effect because the more upvotes you already have, the more likely someone is to upvote you. So if your goal is to get to #1 of the day, 1 upvote at 1AM is probably worth 2 upvotes at 11PM, because the latter would not drive any further upvotes toward the daily goal.

Thus, we pretty much just schedule an email to be sent out to all our existing users (a lot of them are quality PH users) to check out our PH launch (cannot explicitly ask for upvotes). Since these users really like our product, they'd naturally upvote, review, and comment.

    Congrats!

Saw that you guys made a pretty big pivot from your hackernews post a while back.

Could you share any insight into why you made the change / what prompted you ?

For sure! Long story short: the old product did not create enough value for people to pay :)

    It looks awesome; great job!

Cold-emailed and ask for a lot of intros to reporters and writers. Most of the cold emails went nowhere; warm intros ended up working out much better. I'd reach out to other founders I know (or remotely know) whom I saw had a recently published article and politely ask for intro. Unfortunately, PR still relies a lot more on connections just due to the amount of demand.

Here's the article for anyone interested: https://www.forbes.com/sites/frederickdaso/2020/11/06/motion-a-y-combinator-productivity-startup-keeps-you-moving-in-google-chrome/?sh=364fb156f5af

May 1, 2020 Started building Motion Calendar

We started building Motion Calendar as a feature in our old product that helps people streamline and automate their daily tasks. It soon became clear that this calendar feature was what users really loved, and the other features were pretty meh. We are now choosing to double down on the calendar!
