MovieGraph
Movie API powered by GraphQL
As mentioned in an earlier post my inspiration for developing this API was the frustration I had trying to find an API when I was working on a previous project. The API I've built is still an MVP but it's more than powerful enough to create interesting mini projects which may go a long way in attracting attention and even inspiring other developers.
I haven't though much about what I could work on for a mini project, but I think working on something small and interesting will allow me to both build interest in the product and give me an opportunity to truly test this thing for bugs and usability.
I'll post an update on here when I've developed a small project that utilises the API.
While working on a project last year (that sadly died very quickly post-launch), I spent a lot of time searching for APIs that would give me access to data on different media.
There are many APIs that exist for movie, video game, music and book data, but I struggled finding a suite of solutions that had comparable feature sets and interfaces.
For that project I ended up sourcing my own data, painstakingly crawling the web, sorting, filtering and sanitising scraps wherever I could find them.
After closing that project I felt that the biggest shame was wasting the tech that I created to harvest all this data, and it dawned on me that maybe there are other developers who would benefit from these unified data stores I created.
MovieGraph only exposes the data that I harvested about movies specifically, but if the project goes well I hope to make more APIs available to developers through a unified service.
GraphQL offers a good starting point for keeping things flexible, the hope being that developers won't have to compromise on their vision to use this API.
I have many features planned for these projects, mostly based on the kind of functionality I've needed when working on my own projects in the past.
This is the first time I've built a product with a clearly defined vision and it's pretty exciting!

Despite it missing many features and having a general feeling of incomplete-ness, I've decided to launch the website!
Ship early, and all that.
I'm fairly confident that the service is working and 'open for business', but I don't expect to be proven right/wrong on that any time soon.
Now I need to google for some SEO tips...

While working on another project I found myself looking for APIs that could give me data on a variety of different media. These APIs do exist, but I want to make all this data available through a common interface.
