NC Tech Scene
A curated weekly newsletter for Tech in NC
Is that a milestone? I'm not quite sure. I've just been plugging along with the newsletter.
I've put out 37 newsletters since I began. I can put a newsletter together in about 2 hours and send it then deploy it to Netlify.
I continue to struggle to get people onto the newsletter. I've made it thus far, and it's become a habit. If I keep using James Clear's analogy of the melting ice, I'll start melting soon.
I'm going to try advertising for the newsletter. Let me know if you've tried this before. It may be a terrible idea.
I've posted my third newsletter and also made my first mistake. It was a struggle getting a newsletter out this week as I do a bit of it while I work on my lunch break. I had a lot of interruptions during my lunch break so I was a bit strapped finishing it.
I've been reading James clear's atomic habits and have found a weekly newsletter is mostly habits. Several times a week I need to review the leads coming into my news feed, and then craft the email Thursday night.
As for my mistake, I have finally checked the newsletter on my phone and have found that one of my sources looks click baity on mobile. One of my implicit desires with this newsletter is to provide quality links information and I'm not happy with the mobile experience.
In good news, I have switched to netify functions which is just freaking awesome. It creates a serverless function that enrolls people in my mailing list on MailChimp.
I need to start plugging my app more to get more subscribers and I'd like to start putting more analytics on the site.

I sent out my first newsletter yesterday. Right now I'm subscribing to company blogs and news sources in North Carolina and selecting ones I think technologists would be interested in.
I need to decide if my market is just specifically developers or if I want a broader group. I haven't figured out how to do that yet.
I'm refining my criteria for what to include in the newsletter. I've found a lot of articles aren't really actionable for my audience and I think a core reason people sign up for newsletters is for actionable content plus curation.
My next goal is a growth goal 💪. I want to get to 100 subscribers that I think @harrydry mentioned on the podcast. Probably gonna leverage the same pathway as well, which is my own personal network.
Wish me luck!

Congratulations. Any particular reason your subscribe button is faded ?

There was. I was validating email client side, but it looks like autofill was conflicting with it. Probably not the best UX so I'm ripping it out and just relying on server side.

I kind of love the Gatsby and Netlify combo. It was so simple to throw the two together and start my MVP sign up page.
I initially bought a theme from Theme Forest, but realized it's a pain to break apart into a Gatsby site. There's an 1800 line CSS file that won't compile in Gatsby.
I plan to integrate with MailChimp. I haven't decided whether I should use their interface for creating the newsletter or find some way to roll components out to emails.
My next step is to join a co-working space so I can meet other entrepreneurs and use their mailing address for Anti Spam compliance.

I wanted to find information about the tech scene in North Carolina and I couldn't find a great resource.
