Free tools that actually work. Image compression, PDF tools,
Hey everyone! Major milestone update for NeatKit today: the client-side video trimming tools are officially unhidden, fully operational, and live!
Getting here was an absolute gauntlet. I spent the last 8 hours trapped in debugging limbo, watching my repository climb from 47 to a staggering 75 commits just to get ffmpeg.wasm to play nice with my hosting infrastructure.
🛑 The Tech Hurdle: Fighting Browser Isolation Rules
If you've ever tried to run multi-threaded Web Workers client-side using external CDNs, you know the browser's Same-Origin policy is completely unyielding. I kept hitting devastating SecurityError blocks.
To make it worse, my Cloudflare Pages setup has a strict 25MB file size limit for static assets, which blocked me from simply uploading the 31MB compressed WASM binary directly. In a moment of pure debugging tunnel vision, I even deleted my entire deployment pipeline, leaving the live site completely blank for 30 minutes.
The ultimate fix? It wasn't a massive structural redesign. It was tracking down a tiny syntax misconfiguration deep inside my Cloudflare _headers file to properly inject the Cross-Origin-Opener-Policy (COOP) and Cross-Origin-Embedder-Policy (COEP) rules.
💡 The Realization & Product Scope
Fighting through this gave me a major product epiphany regarding local-first web utilities:
The Trade-off: Running heavy tasks locally in a sandboxed browser tab means your device does all the heavy lifting. Trying to compress or trim a 1GB raw movie will completely choke the thread. Cloud servers will always win on pure power.
The Sweet Spot: But for quick everyday clips (like trimming a 10-second screen recording, making a meme, or optimizing an MP4 to fit under Discord's upload limit), local WASM is insanely fast.
Because your files never touch a third-party server, NeatKit gives you 100% data privacy without bloated ad popups or paid gates. I have optimized the video tool specifically around these quick, lightweight clips.
Everything is stable, the headers are solid, and the tool is yours to play with. Check out the live build or look through the open-source repository!

About
My goal was to create a highly optimized, privacy-first alternative to bloated utility sites. I wanted to see if I could combine modern PWA capabilities with browser-native processing (like client-side image compression
