NeckCure
Webcam posture coach for Windows, 100% on-device
I'm a software engineer in Taiwan and I've had neck pain and a herniated cervical disc for about ten years. Physio, chiropractic, acupuncture: each one helped for two or three days, then I sat back down at the computer and it came back. Last year I started waking up at 3am with a numb arm.
The part that bugged me most: I never felt myself slouching. By the time it hurt, I'd been folded over the keyboard for two hours.
So I built NeckCure. It watches me through the webcam I already own, from the side, and when my head drifts forward past a baseline I set myself, it warns me. If I ignore it, the screen slowly dims until I sit back up. Click-through, never locks me out, just makes slouching annoying enough to stop. First week I hated it. It turned out I was hunched about half the day and had no idea.
What I learned shipping it as one person:
Privacy is the product, not a footnote. It's a webcam app, so every frame stays on the PC and nothing is uploaded. That sentence does more work in every conversation than any feature list.
Side view beats front view. Ear-to-shoulder angle from the side is stable; front-view landmarks jitter so much I ended up using only "how much closer did your face get to the camera". Ugly, but far more reliable.
The Microsoft Store is a real distribution channel for Windows tools and almost nobody in this category uses it. I went live there on Sep 1. Store search brings people who are already looking.
Pricing: the posture part is free and always will be. Blink counting and break reminders are Pro at $3.99/month. Free has to be genuinely useful or nobody sticks around long enough to care about Pro.
Nine languages from day one was a lot of work but it's the one thing I can't be out-competed on quickly. Non-English markets have almost no posture apps.
Stack: Python, MediaPipe on CPU, PySide6, Nuitka to build, MSIX for the Store. Backend on Cloudflare Workers, payments via Paddle.
Windows only for now. Mac is the question I get most and I don't have a good answer yet.
I'd genuinely like feedback from people here on two things: does needing a side-facing camera kill it for laptop users, and would you trust a webcam app from a solo developer, and what would it take?
