July 10, 2019 πŸš€ Launched NerdFeedr!

πŸ€“ Hello Design and Developer Nerds!

I'm excited to announce the relaunch πŸš€ of NerdFeedr, a site to help Clients find Remote Designers and Developers for short-term projects.

We built NerdFeedr because every designer and developer we know seems to have a few extra hours per week that they would like to be earning extra income with. NerdFeedr makes it easy for potential clients to see just how many hours you have available to help them with their projects.

Have I mentioned yet that it's completely free to sign up? We will always offer a free membership option, but keep an eye out for a future "PRO" version with advanced features.

Come take a look and join today!

Looks great and I've just signed up as the only other UI designer. Quick question, why did you choose UI as the tag for designers? Could miss good UX designers, brand designers etc.

Also with the skills, I think it would be really useful to use a typeahead, just so you have consistent skills between users.

Either way good luck with the launch!

@soluxos, we pushed out an update today with the ability to display "UI" or "UX" depending on your preference. Thanks again for the suggestion.

Hey! That's awesome. Good stuff @Krazier

        1. 1

Oh, I just realized that my developer added Typeahead to the Skills/Software tag section as well - he didn't tell me that!

I assume you saw, but you can also add projects to your profile too.
          Cheers!

Thanks for the comments and thanks for making it so I'm not the only designer, I was getting lonely!

I used "UI" because it's a bit more generic than "UX", I struggled with that issue though and tried to pick something that would encompass both. I haven't come up with a good abbreviation that would clearly define both. I suppose the most logical solution would be to add another field in your profile to allow you to choose if you want to show as a UI or UX delegation. We'll work on that.

Typeahead is probably a good idea as well, it hadn't even crossed my mind for some reason.

Let me know if you have any other feedback!

The design and layout is very impressive. The name is great! Will PRO Membership be your sole source of revenue? What kind of advanced features are you considering?

    1. 1

Adam, thank you for the nice comments on the layout and the name. I have only had one person reach out so far who didn't like it.

Regarding revenue, there are several obvious ways we could go.

      1. Ads - I hate ads, so I'd like to stay away from that as long as possible, never say never though.
      2. Upwork Model where we take a percentage of every project, this would make us a ton of money but I am not a huge fan of this model either. However, there is decent chance we'll have something like this at some point if we are every the payment gateway between clients and professionals.
      3. Featured profiles, we'll likely have some sort of option for this for those that want extra visibility.
      4. "Pro" account with a recurring monthly payment model - this will be our primary focus. We will always have a free version as well, it will just be limited.

Why a Pro account? There are several reasons...

      1. It's a super easy solution, we don't have to worry about a lot of the headache that would come with project/hourly based payment requirements.
      2. It keeps some of the riff-raff off the site and keeps only the dedicated users as the primary focus on the site and will show clients that you are willing to put some skin in the game to show how committed you are.
      3. It makes for a very clear, consistent cost for our users. There would be zero debate on did we take out the right amount from each payment for our cut, etc.
      4. The fact that we don't try to "hide" who you actually are from potential clients means that they could connect with you directly for projects and thus we'd never get a cut of the project cost, we'd never make money. We want you to showcase yourself as much as possible, if we try to prevent the client from being able to know who you are I think this will lead to bad agreements being made.

With all that said, nothing is set in stone at this point, we are very open to feedback and want to make something that people trust and find value in.

      Hope that helps, Thanks!

I would agree, have Pro Membership and experiment with others. You also probably need a way to show you've vetted these people. There are so many ways you could do this. You could ask each person for two referees or you could get them to do a short online exam to test their knowledge and ability. Maybe you could get them to submit their portfolio for review? Just some way of showing users that these people have the confidence of NerdFeedr.

        1. 1

Yeah, others have mentioned this too. We'll do something to provide ease-of-mind to clients, just have to determine best route with our resources and balance of expectations for everyone. It will probably be along the lines of "Anyone can join, but do these 3 extra things to be verified." approach.

What do you think of "Pay to be Verified", basically pay a nominal fee for us to review you and your account and if we feel confident in you we'll add a verified badge to your profile.

Thank you for your comments, glad you like the general idea and layout of the site.

      Regarding your feedback.

      1. A "gallery" type of experience is in the pipeline, and other features for topic based sections are coming. In fact the "User Details" page is just scratching the surface of planned features.
      2. I debated on the disclaimer for exactly the reason you mentioned. However, I also didn't want to mislead anyone into thinking that all these freelancers had been vetted by us and that they were legit.
      3. Part of the reason is simply due to lack of resources for us to vet every single person, at this point we wouldn't be able to keep up.
      4. What does it even mean to be a legit freelancer? Your expectations may be different than mine.
      5. Unlike places like Upwork where you only get their first name and no access to their external social profiles, our users share all of their profiles and their full name. So you aren't hiring someone blindly like you would be on Upwork.
      6. At this point it's a free service, both from a freelancer perspective and from a client perspective. Nothing (money, hiring, etc.) goes through us, we simply help those seeking and those looking to be discovered.
      7. Look at like LinkedIn, thousands of people are hired through there and there isn't any vetting happening there either, yes it might be a bit more work to research someone but that's a pretty standard thing to do anyway if you are a smart hiring manager.
      8. With all that said, as we move forward we'll start integrating tools to help clients pick quality freelancers through things like (Ratings/Reviews, Referrals, Hours Worked, Testing, etc.)

We certainly thought through the same concerns you did, we considered vetting everyone, putting up a paywall, invite only system, etc. Ultimately we decided to open it up and watch things closely and adjust as we go.

Hope that eases your mind, thank you for your feedback as well.

July 5, 2019 Preparing for launch.

We are finally on the tail end of the rebuild for NerdFeedr, we are currently wrapping up the final details and last minute tasks before we can go live. At this point we are aiming to go live sometime next week if we don't find any show-stopper issues. Can't wait!

About

As a freelancer I often have 10-20 "extra" hours a week that could be used to make some extra money. NerdFeedr allows you to say how much available time you have to work on side projects.
