April 17, 2024 How I Built Ninja Puzzles

The Ninja Puzzles website is built with Jekyll, and all of the content is static html. I use PHP locally to generate the puzzles, the images, and the downloadable PDFs.

The original puzzles were built by hand so I had to make the PHP generators. I tried looking for open-source ones but didn't like what I saw so used a combination of ChatGPT and my own PHP knowledge to put them together. I chose PHP simply because I've been using it for 20 years now so am very comfortable with it.

Likkewise I have a Jekyll starter project that I use for all projects and it allows me to get up and running quickly. This meant the first version of the site took a couple of weeks to build and get online.

About

During the pandemic I made lots of puzzles for my son (mazes, word searches etc) and thought I would share them with others. So I made a website to put them on, and now there's a few hundred and growing.
