June 25, 2025 I've Had Enough of Notification Abuse

Hi Indie Hackers!

My name is Adani, creator of Notifiltr, a notification spam filter for Android. About a year ago, I saw a post on X: https://x.com/GergelyOrosz/status/1589269932293779456

Many apps abuse notification. It is something that also annoy the heck out of me and all this time I end up disabling notification categories one by one on my phone which is a chore. Some apps do not offer anyway to customize this so usually I end up blocking notifications for the whole app which might end up making me miss some updates.

Lately, I've been trying to build something useful using modern AI stacks and I come up with Notifiltr.

What does it do?

Notifiltr listen to notification received by the smartphone. Based on the rules setup by the user, it will classify whether a notification should be blocked or not. If it should be blocked, it will automatically cancel the notification before it is shown to the user.

Rules can be keyword based so you can filter stuff like "% off", "sale", "infected", or "compromised" to filter out junk and malicious notification. There's also AI based rule that can automatically classify notification to Spam or Promotion and block those too.

The notification is not gone. It can still be seen on notification shade but collapsed and does not show on lock screen by default. You can also restore it.

All of these process happens locally and your notification data is never sent out to the server so it is completely safe.

What I'd love to hear from you

Notifiltr is free on Google Play Store right now. I'd like to get feedbacks from the user and improve it to become something really useful for people who wants less distraction in their day to day.

If you have suggestions or would like to discuss anything around running AI on edge and reducing distraction, I'd love to connect and share.

Regards,

Adani

About

Annoyed by junk notifications, I made Notifiltr. Application are too aggressive with their push notification and offers little customization for the kind of notification I want to receive.
