nuTab
Capture your thoughts and favorite links on the new tab page
I just checked the Google Store dashboard for nuTab and saw 1039 active users! All promotion I've done is posting on PH in October and on Reddit last week. Here's the chart of daily installations. I don't know what most of the spikes are, but I'm happy to see a steady increase in regular (non-spike) daily installs.
Maybe it's time to monetize? π€

After some time testing the extension with beta testers, I think it's ready for everybody! I know it's just a side project, but it's as exciting to post it on PH as it was to post FeedBear 2 years ago.
Check it out on Product Hunt, leave a comment, review, or just good vibes! π€©

Congratulations on the launch! Waiting for the firefox release.

thank you! I'll try to get the FF version done as soon as possible.

Can I ask how was your experience launching your product on Product Hunt?
-
2
Sure, do you have something particular in mind?
I prepared some visuals (screenshots & icon), copy (title, description, first comment) in advance, and launched at 0:01 SF time. Then I posted about the launch to some other communities I am a part of. During the day I just work normally and occasionally reply to comments :D
I got a few emails from people trying to sell me upvotes though. I'm sure this is common so I don't judge products I see on PH based on their position. It's too easy to game the ranking.

Looks awesome man! Do you have plans to monetize it?
Upvoted and followed you :) It would be great if you could follow me back:

Love the tool. Had to bypass a couple of warning on Edge to get it working. It's a bit difficult to figure out the typing area when there's no text on the screen. I'm sure this would be very useful. Great work!
-
2
Thank you! I gotta say you're the first person I know using Edge! I released it there because it was dead simple β it's the same package as for Chrome.
What warnings did you get? When I tried it I didn't get any π€·ββοΈ
-
1
Haha! The Chromium Edge I mean. After the extension is downloaded, it gives a warning mentioning that the extension was not allowed because it changes the new tab settings or something similar and gives a link to Microsoft documentation. It is straight forward nevertheless. Just doesn't allow to run out of the box.
-
2
Ah yes, that's Edge protecting users from malicious extensions that would hijack your new tab page to do bad stuff. I guess.
Anyway, I'm glad you like it!

A month ago, I released my nuTab extension on Chrome Web Store and MS Store. I didn't do any promotion except telling a few friends. The extension is completely free, I just left a Buy me a coffee link in the settings.
To my surprise, with only 8 users, someone bought me 33 coffees, praising nuTab! I almost couldn't believe it, who would pay $99 for something that's already free?
This deserves a milestone.
And the takeaway? Don't leave money on the table. Even if you make something for free, include a donation link.

This is cool! :) I have similar experience with H A N D Z. But I got 12$, it is so nice that some people can value the thing for free, too.

your link is missing the http. Had to enter it by hand.
The hands look cool. Any plans on adding more positions? Or pawns insteadnof hands?
-

Thanks a lot :-)
Yep. I plan to do more gestures and even some postures. Is that something what would you use?-

Wanted to give you some feedback after creating something quick for a thank you page. I am not a designer though and might not be your audience.
The hands look great. Love the quality.
A preview image with the hands and filenames helps a lot in navigation. Especially, when your library grows. I found that helpful in other libraries with huge amounts of images.
Add info on how to customize them. I didn't get it at first until I realized I'd probably have to change the sleeve colors, etc directly in blender. Right?
That adds an obstacle for me as I now would have to put on another hat and deal with blender. As a solo-guy time is limited :-)-
1
Hey @azarai, perfect feedback thanks a lot!
-> regarding preview image - do you have some example how it should look like?
-> regarding customisation - yes. Blender is one option, another one is to try Photoshop or other design tool to change the color by adding layers. In Blender there some few clicks needed - basically, you need to click on the model and then follow this picture.. Let me know if this works :)-

Loved the simple grid in this cartoon pack. Preview is on the clipboard, second image.
How would I add a pattern on the sleeves with Photoshop? What did you use in the customization screenshot on your site?
-
1
Thanks! It is pretty simple:
- I downloaded some free pattern on freepik.com
- then used the layer and put it above the PNG file of the hand.
- I changed the layer to multiply (or other type to make it visible)
voila, that's it π

This is cool. Where did you put the donate button?
I too have some extensions. My most popular one has almost 90K users but I've made $0 from it so far so it is a vanity metric. I have learned a lot though so I guess that is a reward in a sense, plus it scales really well. :-p
Really good though on your part since I see in the store listing it says 8 users. Usually I don't even see reviews until I have 100+ users.
-
2
Thanks! The donate button is just a little note in the settings menu.
And wow, 90k users sounds like a lot! Have you done any marketing or it's all organic? I don't know the extensions space at all, I just made a thing for myself and published it :D
-

Yeah me too, I make things for myself haha but monetizing them has been hard which is why I was curious. I haven't really tried tbh. I'm always curious whenever anyone else makes extensions.
With extensions I find that it's a hit and miss depending on if it will take off. I have maybe 10 published right now. If you get featured by google then that seems to help a lot, either on the front page or in their categories/search. No clue how to make that happen though, I've never been featured on the front page.
My one extension with a lot of users actually took off because I changed its name and somehow it got picked up by google search and ranked high for keywords "download all images". That was just pure luck but as soon as the influx of installations started, it has not slowed down. It has taken about 2.5 years to get to 90K. In the scale of all apps its fine, but I'd like to get to millions of users with some extension, it's a good confidence boost if nothing else, and it helps me to learn how to do analytics.
-
1
With 10 apps published, you're quite the extension guru :D
Yeah, if you depend only on "SEO" and being discoverable by name, it's unpredictable.
But you should always put a donation link somewhere in the settings or "about" section.
-
1
Haha, yeah, extensions are my go to for many things and I've been making them since 2016. I even made this tool to help me. Keep sharing your progress though, like I said I'm always excited when I hear people talk about extensions.

That CLI tool looks super useful! Starred for future reference, thank you!

Looks sweet. Am on tablet right now, so could not test it. Does it override the new tab page?
As i have some chrome extension out myself, i am curious of your techstack. what did you use?
-
2
Thanks, Jens. Yes, nuTabs overrides your new tab page so you can have your notes / todos / favorite links always at hand.
The stack: plain Vue.js app with customized tiptap editor and Tailwind CSS. The editor part took the most time, because I wanted to use markdown, but with a live visual representation.
Other js editors are either pure markdown (with separate preview window) or pure WYSIWG and come with styling. Tiptap is renderless which means it provides only the functionality β you have to implement the interface yourself. That can be scary at first, but now I think it's the best approach.
-
1
Thanks.
Tested nuTab and it's cool. The only downside for me is, it's overriding my new tab and I want to keep my llamas on my new tabs :-)
Also, wanted to leave a review on the chrome store but it seems they disabled it too. Tried to add IAP recently and they did disable that too. Damn virus.
Tiptap seems to be cool. Stumbled upon it recently as I was researching writing in browsers (was evaluating published options for http://wearemadrobots.com/ ) Was it difficult to implement your live visual representation?
-
1
Yeah, the store isn't working completely yet... I was surprised they approved nuTab in a few days. I was ready to wait for weeks.
Tiptap implementation was straightforward once I understood the concept (and stopped fighting it). I never worked with renderless components before. Their examples helped a lot.

Trying it out now, I like the simplicity. I think this might work out well, as I wish I had a better note system where notes are central, and not tucked a way on a device notepad. This is super accessible with a click during my workflow.
-
1
Thanks, Matt! I'm glad you like it :)
It's all about how you set up your workflow. I dump my brain into nuTab during the day so I can stay focused. In the evening, I sort everything out, delete things I don't want to keep and categorize the rest to other apps (Notion or Bear). I also keep my daily/weekly to-do list in nuTab (that makes the most difference for me).

Looking forward to the Firefox version! Congrats π

Thank you :) I had the FF version ready to launch together with Chrome and Edge, but some weird errors came up during their review process. I have a lot of work on FeedBear right now, but I hope I can get back to it next month.

nuTab is now available on Chrome Web Store and Microsoft Store (for Edge).
It's free to download and use without any restrictions.
Initial features:
- rich-text formatting (WYSIWYG markdown)
- .md export
- dark/light mode
- favorite links bar
- private (data lives only on your computer)

About
I built nuTab mainly for myself. I wanted a great-looking, fast, visual markdown editor on my new tab page. It's the best place for taking notes, saving favorite links, and managing daily todos without breaking the flow.

Is there any possibility to get some more advanced stats from the Chrome store? Like, where your users come from? It's a shame that Google won't let us have its own analytics product on their Store.
Yeah their Store analytics are pretty much useless. I mean why should I care about the country my users are in and how that metric evolves over time? Source of traffic and conversion rate would be much more useful.
this is great news! are you planning to explore other sub-reddits?
maybe, but I'm not a frequent Reddit user, so don't know many relevant ones. do you have something particular in mind?
Looks great! I use Firefox and haven't tried it, though.
I heard an opinion here that an indie developer should monetize the project from the day one.
FF version coming soon!
That opinion is right, but this is not my main project. I work on FeedBear full-time. I made nuTab primarily for myself as I couldn't find an alternative that would fit my needs.
Congratulations, Tomas! πIt's great to see such success from Reddit, did you post to niche sub-reddits or more general ones? I'll be launching a product soon and am hoping to post to some subreddits, any advice there?
Congrats again, and wishing you continued success :D
Thanks! I posted on just one β https://www.reddit.com/r/InternetIsBeautiful/. It's pretty general I think. What's your product?
That's one of my favourite subreddits haha, thanks for sharing! I've found some fantastic websites and tools there, and it seems to provide fantastic traffic to those with great products.
Currently working on a web app that allows you to create website backgrounds, hero backgrounds, etc., I'm hoping to launch it soon, and of course part of the launch strategy will including posting on Reddit, so that's why it's always great to see others have success on Reddit :D
yeah, mine too! really good stuff there :D
your app sounds interesting, I collect tools like this to be well-equipped when building projects :D let me know when you launch!
I'm glad you're interested, sure I'll let you know when the product is launched! :D
Great job!
thanks!
