November 17, 2025 Building a Tiny Handmade Brand That Actually Connects Me to My Community (OB Tie Dye Update)

OB Tie Dye started as a creative hobby. Now it's steadily turning into a small, scrappy, bootstrapped brand — retail rack, steady orders, local markets, people wearing my pieces around San Diego. Still tiny, still chaotic, still fun.

The part I didn’t expect?
How much it would connect me to my community. Markets, pop-ups, random conversations with people who love color — it’s made me feel plugged in locally in a way my day job never did.

People aren’t just buying clothes. They’re buying a little piece of Ocean Beach, a little piece of the vibe I’m trying to bottle.

Recent Wins

  • New rack placement in a local OB shop

  • More consistent website traffic + repeat buyers

  • Better product photos + color library upgrades

Challenges

  • Scaling production when everything is one-of-one

  • Getting ahead on inventory while doing markets

  • Balancing the business with a full-time media job

Next Experiments

  • Adding a lifestyle/inspiration gallery

  • Cleaning up Shopify collections + navigation

  • More small-batch drops

  • Testing higher-tier items (kimonos, tapestries, etc.)

If anyone else here is building a highly manual, identity-driven physical product brand, I’d love to hear how you handle growth without losing the “handmade soul” part.

About

Because it’s the one place where creativity, chaos, and control all collide. My day job is structured; this is pure experimentation. I get to make something real with my hands and build a brand entirely on my own terms.
