OKRise
Productivity, Family & Kids, Lifestyle, Utilities
I just launched OKRise — a task-reward screen time app. You complete tasks, earn unlock time for TikTok, games, whatever. Here's what I learned building it: 1. The hardest part isn't coding — it's naming OKRise started as "StarBuddy." Then "FocusUp." Then back to OKRise. Every name felt either too generic or too weird. In the end, I just picked one and moved on. Ship now, rename later. 2. Willpower is a bug, not a feature Most productivity apps ask you to "be stronger." That doesn't work. Your brain is wired for instant rewards. Instead of fighting that, I used it — your craving for TikTok becomes the engine driving you through tasks. The insight sounds obvious now. It wasn't obvious at launch. 3. Solo founder = fast, but lonely Built solo with Flutter + Firebase. Shipped in 3 months. No co-founder arguments, no one slowing me down. But also no one to tell me "this feature is stupid" before I spend 2 weeks on it. 4. The Chinese market validated the idea. The Western market is a question mark. StarBuddy (the Chinese version) has real users, real retention. But will American parents pay $12/month for something they could do with a sticker chart and a timer? I genuinely don't know. Would love feedback from anyone who's tried to sell "self-improvement through gamification" to a Western audience.
