OllaVPN
Free post-quantum VPN for private and secure internet access
I have been using OllaVPN’s free version for a while, and my main reason for choosing this particular service was the unique approach to VPN security. Unlike most other products in the niche, OllaVPN makes an open claim about utilizing post-quantum cryptography (PQC).
For those unfamiliar with the concept, PQC is essentially a branch of cryptography that deals with encryption algorithms designed to withstand the onslaught of quantum computers. In other words, it is a proactive approach to the potential threat posed by the technology of the future. I found this concept intriguing enough to try out the service, and the experience has been rather interesting overall.
First and foremost, the free version of OllaVPN does not appear to have a major difference in terms of the user experience. I have been comparing it to other standard VPN products, and while there is a noticeable difference in the technical underpinnings, it does not reflect on the regular use. Essentially, one would install https://ollavpn.com/ and set up the software in much the same way as they would with any other product. The actual differences are visible in the technical details and the specifics of the encryption.
Speaking of which, the entire point of using OllaVPN, at least from my perspective, was to see how exactly PQC was implemented in a commercial product. The company appears to be using a hybrid approach, with ML-KEM-768 as the foundation. I am not in a position to confirm whether or not their approach is truly quantum-resistant, but I found it interesting that a commercial product was attempting to take this approach ahead of most other competitors.
The other reason why I decided to go with the free version was that I did not want to invest in a product right away. After all, a free option was sufficient for me to test out the product and see if it was something I wanted to use on a regular basis. Essentially, I was looking for a PQC-focused product, and OllaVPN’s free option allowed me to experiment without having to pay for a product I may not end up liking.
When I was using the product, I focused mostly on the standard set of features one would expect from a standard VPN application. I paid particular attention to the connection and disconnection process, browsing through the application, the ability to change the location, and the overall stability of the connection after the VPN was engaged. In many ways, this was the most important part of the trial for me, as it allowed me to see how practical the product was on a day-to-day basis. This is where most other VPN products fail to gain my trust, as an impressive set of features does not matter much if the user experience is lacking.
On that front, I must say that Olla VPN appears to be doing everything right. The company knows how to keep it simple and intuitive, offering a product that is focused on the core purpose without getting bogged down in the technical details. There is an entire set of features and customizations for those who want to tinker with the software, but the overall approach is rather straightforward. The company knows its audience, and it is clear that most users simply want to connect to the VPN and browse the web securely.
The only detail I wanted to add before proceeding to the final conclusion was a note about the practicality of the approach. As much as I like the idea of a VPN that is ready for the future, I would not recommend anyone to jump into the service just because of its unique approach to encryption. After all, there is much more to a VPN than just the encryption algorithm, and one must consider the broader context before selecting the product. In this regard, I would recommend asking more questions about the company’s privacy policy, application security, connection stability, location options, performance, and other relevant factors.
That is why I prefer to test products for myself before writing a comprehensive review. A feature list can tell one what a product is capable of, but the actual experience will reveal whether or not those features are useful in the real world. In this regard, I can say that my experience with OllaVPN was largely positive. The product did not try to do anything outrageous, instead focusing on the core features and a unique approach to security.
In my opinion, this was the primary appeal of OllaVPN. It was not a necessity for me to use a VPN that advertises itself as “post-quantum,” but I wanted to explore the technology and see how it was implemented in the product. This was also a chance to learn more about PQC, and I thought that OllaVPN was a good candidate for this endeavor. The free version allowed me to experiment with the product without spending any money, which was a major plus.
In the end, I would recommend this product to anyone with a genuine interest in VPN security and privacy. This was an opportunity to learn more about the future of the technology and get hands-on experience with a product that is ahead of its time. As I have mentioned, it is not a necessity to jump into a service just because of its unique approach to encryption. However, I find the technology to be fascinating, and OllaVPN allowed me to get more familiar with it. I encourage others to do the same, explore the technology, ask questions, and test out the product.
