Hey everyone, I've built a file transfer service that is even faster and simpler than WeTransfer and others. I'm looking for beta users to try it out.

It's called OurTransfers.com. Simply select the files you want to send, enter the email of the recipient, and click send.

On April 7, 2024, at 7:14PM EST, I received my first external user of OurTransfers.com. This user sent two relatively small files to one other person. The transfer took about 20 seconds to complete after the user clicked the send button. Given that this transfer package wasn't large, I believe the user was on a slower connection than I've been testing the system on.

OurTransfers.com is free to use for anyone who wants to quickly send any number of files to a friend, family member, classmate, colleague, or customer.

In order to keep it free, I've created a list of paid-only features that monthly subscribers to my SaaS can unlock for just $15/month. The first paid feature I've added is the ability for senders to set their own custom expiration date on outgoing transfers.

Free users get 3 days before their outgoing transfers expire and their files are deleted. Users who pay the $15 per month subscription fee get to set whichever expiration date they'd like, be that 3 days, a week, or months and years into the future.

This is the first of many paid features to come. The goal of getting this one out now is to upsell early senders on the Pro plan as I iterate to add more paid features. They'll keep the lights on in the interim 😉

I've reached a big milestone for OurTransfers.com: enabled an upgrade flow to let users subscribe to my SaaS.

After a few days of building the flow locally, I've finally deployed and tested it out in production using my own credit card.

My first customer is myself. I like what I've built and deserve to be paid for it, even if only by myself for now :)

I've already spoken to potential customers, but I wanted to test out the flow first and add paid-only features before onboarding those actual customers.

Users can now upgrade to a Pro plan to send massive files regularly. This subscription plan grants paid users the following features:

• Unlimited Transfers of Any Size
• Unlimited Storage
• Expiration: Custom or Never

There are now three new pages:

• Pricing / Upgrades
• Checkout
• Subscription Management

Sometimes, people send you many things. Previously, you'd have to click through to download each one, one at a time. Now, users can now download all files in a transfer.

My girlfriend asked about this feature yesterday, so I pulled it together today ahead of starting my beta tests. She's been helping me alpha test and brainstorm ideas and problems to solve.

Inspiration & Competition

I wanted to be able to easily send files of any size to my family, friends, and customers. OurTransfers enables exactly that.

There are many ways to transfer files to another person. If you have an iPhone, you can AirDrop it. On Android, you can NearShare it. On Web, you can use one of any number of websites that will let you enter an email and send it.

One of the big websites is WeTransfer. They are very clean. I like their homepage a whole lot. They make their money using advertising with subscriptions on top. They work. They make a substantial amount of money. I'm happy for them.

What I don't like about them is their very low limit on file uploads: 2GB. I also don't like how they present the files that are sent. Additionally, I don't like their email verification flow. I want to build a service that is so simple you don't have to think. It should just work with minimal friction.

How I Plan to Make Money

Of course, it needs to make money, so I have many ideas for doing exactly that. It centers around serving content service providers (along with advertising). I've already spoken to a few such potential customers, and they have exactly the problems I planned to solve from the beginning. Thanks to them, I now have confirmation of the problem and some level of validation of pricing model. They are prepared to be my early beta testers.

The way I've modeled it out, I should be able to make enough money to at least breakeven early on so that I can afford to have the transfer service with the least friction and limitations for the masses.

I call it OurTransfers because I want to be able to say things like, "Send it to our transfers." and, "It's in our transfers." More on this soon.

Early Benchmarking

I've already benchmarked transferring a large file (1GB) using WeTransfer vs. OurTransfers, and OurTransfers was at least 12% faster.
