Reducing Food Waste By Cutting Agro Middleman
I've been building PachaMart (pachaM.art), a marketplace for natural products sourced directly from producers.
Every layer between producer and buyer adds cost but not value. This drives me up a wall.
Here's the math nobody talks about:
Producer sells raw good for $X
Distributor buys, marks up 30-50%
Wholesaler adds another 20-30%
Retailer adds 40-60% more
Buyer pays 2-3x what the producer got paid
Producer's margin: thin. Buyer's price: inflated. Nobody in the middle adds real value — just moves the product and takes a cut.
Cutting middlemen means:
Producers earn more per sale (sometimes 2x)
Buyers pay less than retail
Product info stays accurate (no telephone-game distortion)
Trust is direct, not mediated
The tradeoff: more logistics work falls on the platform. Someone has to solve what the middleman used to solve (aggregation, quality control, fulfillment) — just without stacking margins on top.
Building that layer without recreating the middleman problem is the actual hard part.
Curious if others building marketplaces have hit this — how do you handle logistics without becoming the middleman you're trying to remove?
About
Every year thousands of metric tons of food are wasted or sold at a loss in rural communities in Perú.
