Almost 1 month since my launch on HackerNews, I decided I wanted to launch again. The site was improved, the search algorithm was better, it searched more websites, and it worked effectively in more countries (I had added the UK and Australia to the original US website). I was confident, but wanted to post somewhere other than r/books due to my previous failure there.
I had built my karma on reddit slightly and spent some time using Reddit properly, commenting on various posts and making some posts of my own that I believed people would find interesting. This was to keep with the 90-10 rule that dominates most subreddits. I read about r/InternetIsBeautiful, and decided to attempt a launch there.
I posted on r/InternetIsBeautiful and had a slow start much like HackerNews. But this time I was less disheartened, I knew it may take some time to pick up momentum. After about 45 minutes the upvotes really began to tick, I was 4th on the first page on the subreddit. Much like HackerNews the comments started to roll in, and I replied to almost every single one.
After 2 hours, I was top of the subreddit, and had about 100 concurrent users on my site. I expected to stay at the top of a few hours and then to fall off rapidly. Instead, I remained at the top for a full 24 hours after my post was made, and had between 100 and 150 concurrent users consistently from the 2 hour mark onwards. I finished the day with over 20K unique visitors to the website, 2.9K upvotes, 650K reddit views. The launch was even more successful than my HackerNews post, and much like my HackerNews post, I had amassed invaluable feedback, but also massive confidence in the product.
I checked my affiliates the next day to assess, in that day alone I had made about $75. This set my total profits 1 month after launch (7 weeks after ideation) to just under $250. Perhaps more crucially, it felt like I had an audience who really loved the product, still getting return visitors from my HackerNews launch. I'm ready for another month on this product, the plan is to work on significant product improvements for most of the month, I have many things in mind and believe I had achieved the necessary validation from my launches to know I'm building a useful product. If everything goes according to plan, my next launch will be in early December, just in time for Christmas shopping :) .
