An app for tracking shared expenses

March 5, 2020 Finished MVP

I think the milestone here is actually sharing the project. I probably had an MVP looong ago, but I've finally bit the bullet and made the effort to share it with someone other than my dog.

This is very much a side project because I wanted a simple tool for keeping track of shared expenses on group trips. I didn't quite like the existing solutions, and felt like this was a manageable project to get myself into web development. I go into a bit more detail in this blog post, https://dev.to/eje/building-paybaq-io-the-beginning-562d

I haven't put a lot of thought into next steps yet, but I welcome any feedback or suggestions anyone might have.

October 4, 2017 Idea Conceived

After going on a group hiking trip with five people and accumulating many, many shared expenses, we found it much harder than expected to sort out who owed who when we got home.

We set up a google sheet, but it wasn't very straight forward given that some people shared some expenses but not others. I subsequently found and used apps that handled this much more easily, but that just triggered my software developer brain to want to make my own. And as I had been looking for a project to get into web development with, this seemed like a perfect project.

What do you mean by who owed who?

We wanted to split the expenses evenly so some people owed money to others. By who owed who I was referring to how much each person owed to the people that paid.

About

I wanted a quick and easy tool to log shared expenses and figure out who owed who. I really wanted one that didn't require signing up and that was easy to share with others. https://paybaq.io
