March 5, 2021 Client prospecting

As part of my marketing plan for https://picpack.app, I wanted to reach out to sport clubs within the United States. It just so happens that the IRS publishes a giant data set of tax exempt organizations including location and reported revenue. Unfortunately, that dataset is a giant blob.

I wrote a script to categorize these organizations by their NTEE code into individual files to help me with my prospecting.

I thought other Indie hackers targeting non-profits, charities, etc. might find this data useful. If you are looking specifically for Zoological Societies, Golf Associations, Children's Museums, or something in between, this list is for you. You will still need to do the hard work of finding your individual prospect, but this list should help you get started.

March 2, 2021 Got my first paying customer

Ran some Google ads and had someone sign up for a remote wedding, allowing all of their friends and family to upload their photos and videos. It is a pretty good feeling to have someone pay you $15 for software that you wrote all by yourself.

Now I simply need to find better acquisition strategies.

February 28, 2021 Finished the initial MVP

The initial MVP was surprisingly straightforward to build. I had enough scaffolding from past projects that I was able to focus on the keep feature which is uploading and displaying photos and videos.

PicPack is built on Firebase and Google Cloud with Vue / Tailwind on the front end.

January 15, 2021 Came up with the idea

I have a spreadsheet with a lot of product ideas. Whenever I get an idea, I make sure I log it in the spreadsheet. I try to then circle back on them and rate them on a bunch of dimensions including:

Technical Complexity - Is this going to be hard to build or involve a bunch of tech I have never worked on

What is the risk profile? - Are there big privacy concerns? Is there a huge liability exposure if the software fails?

Is there a viral loop? Will the product create its own flywheel once people start using it

Is it B2B, B2C or a hybrid?

How difficult will acquisition be? Will this require a bunch of content to boost SEO. Can I be competitive with Google Ads?

How much time will this require me to commit? I am not ready to go full time on any project so the level of effort needs to be low.

I ran the concept of allowing groups of people to share photos and videos through this spreadsheet and it ranked pretty high so I decided to pursue it. There are several other companies offering solutions in this space so there was also enough problem validation to pursue it.

About

I have a spreadsheet of business ideals, all of which I score using a variety of variable including time commitment, complexity, viral loops, customer base, acquisition strategies, etc. PicPack was #1 so I built it.
