March 31, 2026 I built a walking meditation app with zero engagement hooks

Every walking app I tried wanted to optimize my walk. Pace, splits, calories, leaderboards. I just wanted to walk, think, and sometimes sit quietly.

So I built Pilgrim. It tracks your route, records voice notes along the way (transcribed entirely on-device with WhisperKit — nothing leaves your phone), and has a meditation mode with guided prompts and ambient soundscapes. Each walk earns a digital goshuin — a generative seal derived from the walk's data, like a stamp in a pilgrim's journal.

The deliberate absences: no accounts, no analytics, no streaks, no leaderboards, no social feed, no notifications, no cloud. Free, open source (GPLv3), no subscriptions.

The business model is: there isn't one. It's a practice tool, built as part of the walk · talk · meditate project.

Some of you may remember OutRun — the open-source run tracker that hit the HN front page twice. Pilgrim is its spiritual successor, rebuilt from the ground up with a different purpose.

Built with SwiftUI, WhisperKit for on-device transcription, and zero server infrastructure.
