August 19, 2026 Built a $29 flat-fee Chrome extension to stop generic AI proposal spam on Upwork (BYOK)

Hey IH community,

I just listed my new micro-product, PitchHook, in the product database and wanted to share why I built it and why I chose a non-traditional pricing model.

The Problem: Generic AI Fluff Clients on Upwork decide whether to open a proposal based almost entirely on the 150-character preview window. Most freelancers using generic ChatGPT prompts generate 300-word walls of formal text that clients ignore instantly.

To get replies, I always had more success using a sharp, 2-sentence diagnostic hook that proves you understand their technical problem rather than some long, generic story about your experience and whatever else you can cram into it.

The Solution: PitchHook for Upwork I built PitchHook as a lightweight Chrome extension (Manifest V3) that sits right inside Upwork job listings. It analyzes the job description and generates a diagnostic opening hook focused on technical problem-solving rather than sales pitch fluff. It detects the field you are applying for and will write a proposal while being aware of the audience it is writing for. On top of that, you can add your own short resume to the extension, which it will also use for the proposal it is generating.

Why BYOK + Flat Fee ($29 Lifetime) Instead of charging a monthly subscription with artificial token limits, I decided to go with a "Bring Your Own Key" (BYOK) model:

  • Users plug in their own OpenAI or Claude API key.

  • Each hook costs fractions of a cent directly from the provider.

  • Users pay a single $29 flat fee for lifetime access to the extension UI via ExtensionPay.

Tech Stack Kept it lean to launch fast and maintain low overhead:

  • Vanilla JavaScript & Manifest V3

  • ExtensionPay for licensing

Question for the Community For those building browser tools or micro-SaaS: how do you view the trade-off between BYOK (low support/server costs, high privacy) vs. recurring subscriptions? Would love to hear your thoughts or feedback on the store listing!

The BYOK choice is interesting because it changes what the $29 is actually buying. The tradeoff feels less straightforward than simply lifetime vs subscription.

About

I often use Upwork. Proposals are your first way of getting in touch with employers. AI can ease the work, but often generates generic, long texts. I wanted to create a tool to improve this and make our lives easier.
