March 23, 2020 Getting reviewers

I am now confident enough in my product to share it as an Open Beta.

Anyone can try PlagiaShield for free and get value from it. They can monitor up to 500 pages of one domain, once.

I'm reaching to relevant people in the SEO world to offer them a coupon in exchange for feedback. They get to check 5000 pages for free.

I'm writing this Indie Hackers product page to share what I can with the community.

May 23, 2019 Learned & applied front-end and Serverless

Even though I am a (food) engineer by training, most of my career was on the business side. I was a product manager for consumer brands: mainly dairy products and pharmaceuticals.

With time, I leaned towards the technology side of marketing. In 2014 I created and led the Business Intelligence department. Then I implemented the marketing CRM.

By 2018 I was definitely more technical. I was the Chief Data Officer of a worldwide market research company. Python was my main programming language. I was used to the AWS platform and successfully passed my Solutions Architect certificate (thanks ACloudGuru!)

But now... building a self-service product is quite a different story. I have to build it for others.

The first challenge for me was the front-end. I only used Wordpress before. I recently learned the basics (HMTL, CSS, Javascript) and I built my web app using React.

The other challenge was to learn Serverless. It was an obvious choice even though it meant thinking in a whole new way.

In May I had a first working version. Or had I? It did not stand tests with websites of more than 500 pages. Scale was a challenge.

March 16, 2019 Done with market research

The day after helping my friend, I wondered if what I have just done could be the beginning of a viable business.

At the time, I was working on a very ambitious project: Graph Guru.

I have been a product manager for seven years, so my first instinct was to put together a business plan.

Firstly, what would such a service be called? What's the market? I have been doing SEO for my previous website techmoov.fr, but I never had to look into the particular problem of having my content stolen.
We often hear about "duplicate content," but it mostly refers to a piece of content you have in several pages of your website.

What I was working on was plagiarism. More specifically: fighting plagiarism at scale to achieve better SEO results.

Plagiarism checkers are legion. They allow teachers to check student assignments. Companies use such tools to verify the work of a freelance writer. However, no online software were built to protect content-heavy websites from plagiarism.

I also looked at the market in terms of SEO. I used the KW Finder service from Mangools to gain insights on the keywords professionals were using.

Obviously, I also considered my position and current expertise when deciding to pursue this adventure.

At the end of the weekend, I have done all my research. I structured my findings in a Lean Business Canvas, printed it in an A3 document, and pinned it on my wall. I decided this would be my future company.

March 14, 2019 Helped a friend get his rankings back

In March 2019, a friend of mine lost 70% of his website traffic in one day. A Google SERP algorithm update hit him.

One of the biggest problems was that his content was not unique anymore. For 5+ years, he hired experts in his domain to write thousands of high-quality blog posts.
However, silently, theses articles were being copied by malicious or dishonest website owners.

To get his rankings back, he had to:
fill in the copyright removal form Google provides in the Search Console.
contact
He first needed to find all content thefts. That's where I helped. I worked on a script which:
scanned his website
looked for thefts for each of the blog posts and compared the two texts.
exported a list of potential thefts.
It was slow and incomplete. But It helped my friend a lot. Using the list, he got rid of almost all content thefts. He also got a significant part of his ranking backs.
