I didn’t expect this.

I posted about a self-hosted file manager I’ve been building (CodePanel) on Reddit.

Within ~20 minutes:

• ~3,000 people logged into the demo

• constant activity

• real users clicking around, testing things

Then the post got removed.

No gradual drop. Just… gone.

What I posted (in short)

The idea was simple:

Most file managers work fine… until you introduce multiple users.

That’s where things break:

• permissions are too basic

• no visibility into who changed what

• workflows get messy fast

• UI feels outdated

So I built something focused on that.

What surprised me

Not the traffic — the intent.

People didn’t just view the post.
They actually logged in and started using the demo.

That tells me:

• the problem resonates

• the framing works

• people are actively looking for better tools here

What didn’t work

Distribution.

• reposted after removal

• kept the same link structure

• sent users straight to the demo

That triggered Reddit’s spam filters → account got restricted.

Lesson learned the hard way.

What I changed since

• Removed any sales-style links from the demo

• Made the demo more neutral (no friction, no signup)

• Added documentation as the main entry point

• Starting to rethink how I introduce the product

The product (quick overview)

CodePanel is a self-hosted file manager with:

• role-based access control

• built-in code editor

• activity logs (who did what, when)

• session management

• file operations (upload, edit, organize, etc.)

It’s designed to feel simple, but still give control where it matters.

Honestly, the 20-minute spike was more useful than weeks of quiet posting elsewhere.

Now I just need to not lose the next one.
