February 2, 2026 Building PlugHopper: A global power compatibility checker for travelers

Hey IH 👋 I’m Juan, currently building PlugHopper: a site that tells travelers whether their devices will work abroad (plugs, voltage, adapters, converters along with some tiny but very useful basic data for each country, etc.).

The problem:
Global power standards are a mess. Voltage ranges, plug types, frequency differences, and half the guides online are wrong or oversimplified. Best case: you buy unnecessary gear. Worst case: you fry expensive electronics.

What PlugHopper does:

  • Country-by-country electrical compatibility (195+ countries)

  • Origin → destination adapter checker

  • Device safety calculator (dual voltage vs single voltage, transformer required, risk scoring)

  • Travel routes & comparison pages for SEO (US→UK, UK→EU, etc.)

  • Affiliate recommendations (adapters, converters, eSIM, hotels) + AdSense

Why I’m building this:
Travel electrical info is fragmented and outdated. I wanted a single source of truth with actual logic instead of generic advice.

Current traction:

  • Recently launched

  • ~50 daily uniques and growing

  • First affiliate commission came in yesterday

  • Heavy SEO focus (programmatic country + route + comparison pages)

Next steps:

  • Scaling SEO with comparisons and route intent pages

  • Improving UX for high-intent travelers

  • Growing authority (backlinks, HARO, PR)

  • Monetization experiments beyond AdSense

Would love feedback on:

  • SEO structure

  • Monetization ideas beyond affiliates/ads

  • Any obvious UX or product gaps

About

PlugHopper turns global plug and voltage standards into simple answers for travelers: what works, what breaks, and what to buy. I built it after realizing how fragmented and misleading existing info is.
