February 26, 2024 How to Enhance Your Product When You Have Few Users

As indie developers, navigating the early stages of a product—when you have zero or just a few users for an uncertain period—is crucial.

It's essential to continuously improve your product. There's always something that isn't quite right, but identifying which feature needs enhancement can be challenging without user feedback.

The solution? Eat your own dog food. You must become a genuine user of your product. This approach allows you to discover pain points or design flaws firsthand. I've been practicing this with my tool, PomodoRoll, and it's been enlightening.

Initially, I noticed I wasn't being alerted when a Pomodoro session ended. To address this, I added browser notifications as a secondary alert mechanism. Then, I realized that playing LoFi or soft music helped me enter a state of flow more easily, leading to the integration of a Spotify player for enhanced productivity. However, distractions were a significant issue, especially when browsing Google Analytics, AdSense, and Facebook fan pages. To combat this, I developed a Chrome extension (PomodoRoll Ex) that blocks these sites during Pomodoro sessions. This extension activates automatically when a session starts. Moreover, recognizing the need for flexibility, I introduced custom rules allowing users to set different Pomodoro timer configurations based on their available time slots.

I firmly believe that actively using your product reveals insights into necessary improvements. I hope sharing my experience can inspire others to adopt a similar approach.

December 25, 2023 Reflections on Building PomodoRoll: Insights from a Solo Developer's Journey in the AI Era

The landscape of software development has transformed in the age of AI, drastically lowering the barrier to entry for creating innovative products. I embarked on building PomodoRoll within a quarter, despite lacking extensive experience in web frontend and UI/UX design. Leveraging my programming skills and AI tools, I crafted a product that rivals professional websites.

Here are key takeaways from my journey:

  1. Idea Execution Amplified by AI

Ideas hold minimal value; execution is paramount. With AI's assistance, execution becomes more accessible. Rapid trial-and-error becomes feasible, potentially leveling the playing field for developers. The future might not solely favor developers; it could lean towards individuals with strong determination, creative thinking, and adeptness in leveraging AI tools.

  1. Uphold Principles

As a sole developer, I've found it challenging to persist in building a product. Throughout this journey, I've encountered numerous hurdles—deciding on a suitable color palette, managing energy allocation for implementing multiple features, and dealing with days where the progress falls short of expectations. These obstacles sometimes lead me to question whether to give up and opt for working for someone else to earn a steady paycheck. However, my solution lies in reminding myself that if I don't pursue this, I'll never have the chance to change my life. I might merely become a replaceable figure in another company.

  1. Prioritize Critical Features Strategically

Prioritize critical features first, fancy features later, and avoid raw, underdeveloped concepts. To expedite product development, begin by listing all desired features. Identify crucial elements vital to your product's functionality and implement those first. Some features might be less critical or currently unfeasible—defer these. Additionally, certain features might exist solely as ideas without clear specifications; avoid investing effort until a clear plan is established. Consider using the Now-Next-Later technique for effective prioritization.

  1. Embracing Failure and Maintaining Optimism

It's not shameful to fail; it's normal to experience setbacks. Just as children stumble before mastering walking, remember that setbacks are part of the process. There's always a way forward that we can discover.

  1. Beyond Product Launch: A New Beginning

Releasing a product marks a milestone, but the journey continues. Improving the product, finding customers, and enhancing visibility pose ongoing challenges. It's a demanding phase, but the determination to persevere persists.

These insights encapsulate my solo journey so far. Your advice and feedback would be immensely appreciated. Wishing you all a Merry Christmas and looking forward to your valuable comments!
