pophurdle

A lightweight, privacy based popup blocker.

September 28, 2020 Pophurdle has run on 1M+ pages!!!

I can't believe it...

My lightweight, privacy-based popup blocker broken the million mark.

In future updates, Pophurdle will have fully migrated to an analytics solution that is not Google based (ex. plausible). It still is heavily anonymized regardless, but this just helps prove the point even more.

If you have not checked it out yet, it's free!
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pophurdle/aahomkibgllnelmhgifialfohphlfjip

It helps stop the disable Adblock popups when it can while also dealing with passable paywalls when browsing. And the best part is you don't give up any private data, unlike what the alternatives take like what you type into forms (yes some extensions really do that).

I only ask for an email to send updates infrequently and never will spam you because I don't like it either.

Cheers! https://pophurdle.com/
1M was achieved on Sept 21st!

@Aidan: Hey Aidan, I recnetly installed your plugin. It works great but as a developer I faced a weird issue. Your extension was deleting my local storage data that I was using to persist session in web application. In most of the cases this make sense since you might wana delete data stored by others but I did not realize that and I end up wasting full day on it.
Please don't get me wrong. Your plugin is great but I was just wondering if there would be a warning (or maybe something else) that can warn user about deleting localstorage data and educate them as well, it will help to save developers hours as well as support hours (if people use our software and if it does not work than they will surely call us). Most of the people might not care about it but somebody like me can save hours.

Thank you again for making this great plugin.

Thank you so much for this, I know this is a problem and will include a warning/fix in the next update. Immense apologies for the inconvenience that was caused! The next update should come sometime in November so disable it until then if it's that bad.

    Congratulations!

In future updates, Pophurdle will have fully migrated to an analytics solution that is not Google based

Does this mean that currently pophurdle automatically adds Google Analytics to any page you visit?

    1. 1

It's anonymized and usually sent when you report a broken site or click the icon. Knowing pages with high hit counts is important if a website breaks but it should have no specific user info associated with it.

August 20, 2020 Pushed the v1.5 update!

The May autoblocking update became the August update and luckily it did not become the September update! I finally was able to submit Pophurdle for review for this version and hopefully 🤞 fingers crossed 🤞 it won't get rejected (happens on the chrome store sometimes).

If you have not checked it out yet, it's free!

August 10, 2020 Pophurdle has run on 500k+ pages!

I still can't believe my lightweight, privacy-based popup blocker has run on this many pages.

The May autoblocking update became the August update and there's some really exciting stuff in the works. In the September update, pophurdle will have fully migrated to an analytics solution that is not Google based (ex. plausible). It still is heavily anonymized regardless, but this just helps prove the point even more.

What do you mean by dodging paywalls?

    1. 1

I mean like articles that ask for you to disable adblock or say you have x reads left. It doesn't dodge hard "paywalls" that you literally have to pay for. I'll change the wording a bit soon to make that more clear!

June 2, 2020 Pophurdle has run on 200k pages!

I still can not believe people are using the internet that much!

I'm currently finishing up the v1.0.2 update that will automatically block popups without the need of pushing the button! Be gone popups!

If you have not checked it out yet, it's free for alpha users and will help stop the disable Adblock popups while also dealing with passable paywalls when browsing. The end goal is helping creators earn a portion from it too!

Check it out here:

The update is coming fast and will break ground in automatically blocking these sites in a whole new way!

Cheers!

Correct me if I'm wrong but aren't there heaps of other extensions available for blocking popups?

    1. 1

This one is a little bit different, data will anonymized as much as possible to provide basic feature support. Other blockers are pretty nasty when you take them apart and look at the way they track your full-on with IP addresses and fingerprinting everything you touch.

      1. 2

You should certainly mention that on your homepage. I develop extensions too and I see that a lot of people are conscious about extensions grabbing their personal data.

Btw, does this block admiral popups?

  2. 2

    Hi Aidan!

I do similar stuff in Snap Search - website/app - with the same objective - a distraction free browsing experience. The latest update I put out blocks the GDPR/Cookie consent popups. Would you be up for a quick chat?

    1. 1

Id love to connect sometime! I see how we could have some overlap and it seems that yours is more for helping the user's privacy without being tracked, ours could be a possible power couple sometime in the future!

      1. 2

Yes that's exactly what I'm hoping for! Hit me up via mail or twitter sometime when you're free.

May 17, 2020 Pophurdle has run on 100k pages!

With how much people use the internet, I'm still surprised that Pophurdle users used it this much!

After a month since launch, I'm proud to say that Pophurdle has graced over 100k pages online and hopefully will continue to do even more so in the future.

If you have not checked it out yet, it's free for alpha users and will help stop the disable Adblock popups while also dealing with passable paywalls when browsing. The end goal is helping creators earn a portion from it too!

May 1, 2020 V1.0.1 Release (Blocking more popups)

Its finally here, you can block cookies on any site you wish now with the addition of the new button!

If you have not checked it out and want an awesome way to deal with paywalls and popups when browsing, check it out here for free while in alpha:
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pophurdle/aahomkibgllnelmhgifialfohphlfjip

Me and my co are working on version 1.0.2 which will automatically block popups instead of selecting the sites you want to block on!

We are hoping that eventually we can work with publishers and creators to make a way where they can earn more money without ads on a paid version.

Screenshots are blank in your extension listing

    1. 1

Yep, they are being updated with the v1.0.1 rollout, the chrome store is very slow sometimes to finish the reviews to publish because they have to check so much.

  2. 2

    Very interesting Aidan!
Maybe you should discuss more the business model. I have worked for huge publishers and know about their pain points and requirements.

    1. 1

Absolutely, we have it planned in the upcoming weeks to show how creators/publishers can benefit!

(We were a little busy working on the v1.0.1 update but should have more time now)

      1. 2

Cool. Wish you a lot of success.

April 14, 2020 100+ installs on our extension! 🤯

Launched alpha version almost a week ago for an extension that helps out creators by giving them a better revenue alternative than ads while supercharging your ad blocker!

Install it here (free for alpha users ): https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/pophurdle/aahomkibgllnelmhgifialfohphlfjip

Let me know if you want any features added, were gonna eventually make it paid so the money can go to the publishers!

April 13, 2020 Hit the front page of HN

I still can not believe it! We hit #5 at our post's peak on HN. Next time it would be a better idea to prep for the traffic by making sure we know how many people installed it through a better analytics platform than chromes default slow one (takes a day or two to update the stats so we're waiting for the dust to settle)!

We got 100 installs a few days after launch from HN!

If you have not checked it out, please do and install it here to supercharge your ad blocker on chrome:

Leave a good review if possible or let me know if you have any suggestions!

It will eventually work for all sites but at the moment it's for a select few as we iron out the kinks.

About

An extension to browse without distractions. It's hard to truly enjoy the internet when every corner you turn leads to a popup. Tries to stop anti adblockers if the site tries to spam you once you disable it.
