Hoppscotch.io
Open source API development ecosystem
At Hoppscotch, our focus has been on empowering developers to focus on their work of building and testing Application Programming Interfaces (APIs). In the past year, we have come a long way and we are excited to share the latest milestones in our journey.
Today, we’re announcing that we’ve raised $3M in seed funding led by OSS Capital! Additionally, we are excited to share a slew of new product updates aimed at re-envisioning the principles and practices to continue developing the best-in-class tool for developers to create APIs.
Next-generation companies are built with Hoppscotch
Thousands of companies –from early teams to growth-stage –use Hoppscotch to develop and test APIs. Employees from Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, IBM, Cisco, RedHat, Verizon, Emirates, OLX are just a few examples.
Hoppscotch’s tools and API development methodologies are becoming the standard for high-performing teams, and the 500,000+ people-strong Hoppscotch community represents a welcoming and fast-growing hub of globally productive developers. Tools like Hoppscotch have become even more critical as companies operate on headless API-driven methodologies. APIs represent the future of making software and communicating data.
Partnering with OSS Capital
Following our progress, and to accelerate and to continue taking Hoppscotch to the next level, we’ve partnered with OSS Capital for our Seed. Joseph Jacks (general partner, OSS Capital) led our seed round and joins our board. We admire and resonate with OSS Capital’s and Joseph’s long-term approach to company building and respect their exceptional track record of backing next-generation, category-defining COSS companies.
“OSS Capital is honored to partner with Liyas Thomas in leading the seed round for Hoppscotch, alongside Automattic — the creators of WordPress. Since first learning about Liyas and his work through the DEV.to community, our first seed investment, we quickly developed a strong sense of the passion, authenticity, and exceptional vibrancy exhibited in the Hoppscotch community. As API-driven development continues to become a fundamental driver of digital innovation and transformation, we believe Hoppscotch will shape and further evolve the cutting edge of API tooling for developers everywhere. In a short period since launching, Hoppscotch has captured the adoption and loyalty of 500,000+ developers globally, and established itself as the fastest-growing open-source ecosystem in India, and globally in its category. Congratulations to Liyas and team on their success so far!”
— Joseph Jacks
Founder and General Partner, OSS Capital
In addition, several industry leaders are participating in this round and bringing on their insights and networks:
- Austen Allred, co-founder & CEO of Bloom Institute of Technology (formerly Lambda School)
- Paul Sieminski, chief legal officer of Automattic
- Clint Smith, chief legal officer of Discord
- Tod Sacerdoti, founder & CEO of PipeDream
This funding, along with the support from our investors, gives us the resources to really accelerate and go after defining the new standard for software development.
Looking ahead
We started Hoppscotch in August of 2019, with a simple insight: building and testing APIs has increasingly grown in complexity. The current approach is to layer on more processes and cumbersome tools. We want to see a world that unwinds all of this complexity by providing the practices and tools that fit the developers' workflow, empowering teams to focus on the act of building.
We are grateful for all the support we have received from our customers, partners, and investors. Let’s make software as a craft feel magical again.
Join us - we're hiring!
Join our journey to build Hoppscotch for an API-first software era.
We're hiring in product, engineering, and design.
Liyas Thomas
Founder & CEO, Hoppscotch
Hoppscotch just received it's 25,000th star on GitHub. We'll use this milestone to recap Hoppscotch’s growth and other important milestones since its beginning as an experimental project in 2019. We've accomplished lot of great things together.
While tracking the success of an open source project is known to be a hard problem, we've a few metrics available to us. Currently 114 developers have contributed to some of the 2570 commits of the Hoppscotch repository made available in 7 releases. And this is only data from the main Hoppscotch repo. The ecosystem has many other repos ranging from Hoppscotch Browser Extension (which fixes CORS issues) to Proxyscotch - A simple proxy middleware server.
The number of stars of a GitHub project is yet another indicator, because it means people are adding the project to their list of favorites. However, people that starred Hoppscotch are not necessarily users and many users don’t star Hoppscotch (if that applies to you, consider giving us a star!), therefore its not a precise metric. Till date Hoppscotch has 100k+ all-time users during the span of an year. Which includes ~20k+ monthly users.
Milestones like this are proud moments for the developers & community, help motivate more work & new developments. If you'd like to support Hoppscotch open source project, consider sponsoring us on GitHub.

Hey @liyasthomas sounds like you have really great to achieve the latest milestone and congrats on it.
You should consider about writing a guide how to manage and grow an open source project. There alot of open source movement organisations around the world and the guide could very help them. Just a thought from my side.

Of course. I scribble about open source and projects on Dev.to https://dev.to/liyasthomas

This is awesome. I know an open software movement just a few buildings away from my house. Will share it to them today.
I see that you are from Thrissur. Do you see a correlation between open software movement being big in Kerala because of the state is known famous for its communist values? I know a few guys from Kerala who are into the open software movement. Maybe I am generalising here too much but thought I'd just the question to see there is a correlation or not.
-

communist values?
I dont know what that is. Anyways, as software eats the world, open source will eat the saas / softwares. This goes all the way from small scale apps to enterprise level softwares.

Congrats!!! I checked out Postwoman and it looks awesome! also I really liked the name :)
Few matters I was bothered about:
I don't like dark mode, even thought I am a programmer and it's very fashionable now, my first instinct when viewing a dark app is just to leave it. You should have a toggle mode of dark mode right there in the home page.
Either in Github or at the app itself, you should have a simple reason why is it better to use than Postman.
A simple tutorial\documentation in a visible place is way more important then a detailed Readme, and less tedious.
If any of these things was implemented and I didn't noticed then I am really sorry, you can just ignore it.
Anyway, Good luck!!!!-

Hi there — thanks for your honest feedbacks.
Postwoman do have a diverse theme editor which includes both light and dark modes as well as accent color theming.
Customize now ✨ https://postwoman.io/settings
What you said about a description on how Postwoman is better than Postman is very informative. Will work on it 🎯.
I'll try to make readme more friendly than being very detailed. 💯
Thanks.

Postwoman now has 13 GitHub sponsors which donates $230 per month to support development and server costs.
Postwoman is a free, fast and beautiful API request builder, web alternative to Postman - which helps you create requests faster, saving precious time on development.

Thats really awesome! Did you do anything specific to get the sponsors or did they just convert on their own? I am managing a large library myself so this is of particular interest for me :-)

Well done. I didn't realize GitHub sponsors was performing so well. Congrats. Just added GitHub sponsors to my Repos as well. Thanks

Great! You should. Give your audience a chance to say thank you.
Btw, what's you project? Care to share the repo link?

I just turned it on so took some inspiration from your project https://github.com/vegasbrianc/prometheus

Nice job! If I may suggest, you should change your wording to be similar to ProseMirror's (another open source project), which I found pretty neat:
If you are using ProseMirror to make profit, there is a social expectation that you help fund its maintenance. Start here.

Wow thanks for suggesting. Thats a nice copy. I'm changing now.

Congrats!! , Really looking forward to Teams Support in postwoman

We're working on it. Already have a draft PR 👍

Congrats, just do something about the UI/UX doesn't feel like working on it.

Is there anything specific you wanna improve..?

Nice... it is great to have sone more competitions in this space. I’m not keen on postman as it has become too bloaty over the years. I usually use insomnia but I’ll give this a try today to see if I fancy a switcheroo.
Getting paid for open source is awesome. Hope you find more sponsors. Maybe ask stripe if they want to?
-

I love insomnia. It's open source and does the job beautifully. Postwoman is a little bit different than Postman and Insomnia. Most of API testing tools are Native apps with high resource consumption. Thats why I built Postwoman. It's a web app. A PWA. Do check it out and let me know your feedbacks 🙌💯
And how do I ask Stripe out..? shed some light 😀
-
2
Great even better. I don't like installed apps really for something like this. I'm now interested in how you got around cross origin restrictions, so will need to try it.
I don't know how to ask Stripe out, but I know who I'd ask : @csallen.
-
1
Hi @csallen — thanks for this platform. IH helps me and similar indie makers a lot ✨
I'm also a full-stack developer at Buy Me a Coffee (buymeacoffee.com) — we're a verified partners of Stripe. You guys at Stripe are awesome. Convey my kudus to the whole dev team at Stripe.
-

Ah OK - it can't do cross origin requests (unless allowed via CORS), which is expected if it runs completely client side. You could work around this by wrapping it in a Firefox/Chrome extension that has the required permissions.
I really like this though, I will use it where I can because I like to just get right into it with a URL not open up an app and wait for it to open and all that.
-
1
Yes PW do have an actively maintained Browser extension in Firefox and Chrome that handles CORS. It's also open sourced under our GitHub organization / collaborators.

One of the concerns my team always had over using postman when security. It seemed fragile and sharing data between users was really important, but more critical was the security that postman employed (suspect...).
Can you share a bit about what off-the-shelf technology postwoman is using to security saved resources.
-
2
Well, Postwoman have two modes. Normal and signed-in mode. In normal mode (signed out), all informations regarding request and endpoints are synced to localstorage. They stay inside your web browser isolated from other applications.
When signed in with Google/GitHub, the following data are synced with Firebase datastore with your UID as key.
- History
- Environments
- Collections
- Notes
All your credentials including API key, Bearer Tokens etc won't leave your web browser unless you make use of Proxy (Settings > Proxy) in which requests are sent to proxy middleware.
Let me know if you've any specific/ further doubts.
Edit: Source code is available in GitHub: github.com/liyasthomas/postwoman
-
1
Ah got it, so it doesn't well support sharing resources with other team members. I could see that be a huge undertaking to go from firebase to share resources, and something that would require some fundamental changes to how to secure the shared data between users.

Hey, is this similar to the API development tool postman?
-
2
Similar? yes
I would say a better, lightweight alternative. It's a progressive web app with all essential features for free and doesn't need to installed on your system to run tests. And moreover it's open sourced.
Runs online from any device, tables, smartphone etc.

Oh ok! Looks great. As someone who uses postman regularly, this tool looks like a pretty good alternative.

About
I had a low-end PC which couldn't possibly afford to run another Electron app for testing APIs. From that moment onwards, I wanted to make an API testing platform in the web.
