March 15, 2020 MVP take 2 - a reading companion

Few months back I released a habit building app that uses social accountability etc to help people build long lasting habits. Based on feedback from early users, I've now focused on the active reading niche. The goal of the app now is to help people read more books per year and retain more of what they read.

Would love for ya'll to take it for a spin and your thoughts on it :)

October 8, 2019 Released MVP - would love feedback!

At long last, launched version 1 of Potential, a virtual habit trainer (https://trypotential.com) a few days back. Would love for you guys to take a look and give me any feedback you might have :) Some of the questions in my head -

  • Is this something you've ever felt the need for?
  • I'm a developer and only just dipping my toes in the scary world of sales and marketing :) Would love any suggestions/tips on how to best spread the word.
  • Lastly, I'm considering couple of other, more B2B, verticals - either in the employee wellness space, targeting gyms/trainers or social media life coaches. Is that a good idea?

Or any other thoughts!

Thank you! πŸ™

    Hi Ishan,

Congrats on taking the plunge! I am very excited for you.

I had a look and to be honest the site hasn't really resonated with me. I think it may be because while I agree that forming good habits would be great, how Potential would help me specifically wasn't very clear. Maybe it would help to make clear the connection between why people can't form habits, and how Potential helps to fix that.

    Good luck!
    JP

Hi JP, thanks for taking the time to look at the website. Really appreciate your feedback. Couple of other folks mentioned this as well, so completely agreed on being more clear on the problem and how Potential helps solve it.

    Congratulations on the launch πŸ‘
The landing page looks great but I feel you can put a better illustration on the hero section.
    Try https://undraw.co/illustrations.

Thanks man! That website is amazing, thanks a bunch for passing it on. Will definitely use it quite a bit going forward.

Just downloaded! I'll check it out and see if I can provide any helpful feedback :-)

Now I just have to think of a habit I want to form. I always say I should take vitamins...

Signed up, set goal and did my first check-in! (Practice French)

The app is really nicely designed and I like that I don't need to actually type to talk to the bot. That is a nice feeling.

I really love the diary aspect when it asks how I felt - I think this could be expanded and also made into an archive. It could also be fun to give yourself an emoji to represent how things went today (Proud, angry, hard, strong, bored, mind blown, etc).

There is a "test" message in the buddy chat which could be re-written to provide context for the conversation that is supposed to happen there.
I was assigned buddies but I'm not sure exactly how they will interact with me and how much of my content they will see. (I'm assuming none actually since I can't see theirs).

My schedule is very crazy so my habit will never happen at the same time every day, therefore reminders at a set time are a bit useless. Other options for reminders such as random or none could be interesting.

      The puppies are amazing.

When I check-in I might not always be able to take a photo of it, but I would like to describe what I did. For example, today my French practice was going to a French meetup where I spoke entirely in French. I don't have a picture from it unfortunately.
Later, this could be visualized along side all of the other photo contributions.

      I hope this helps!

Wow, can't thank you enough for trying the app out and taking the time to write out the feedback! Glad you enjoyed certain aspects of the app, and hear you loud and clear on the reminders, and description based check-in instead of the photo-proof... that's a great idea.

    Hi Ishan,

    Congratulations on shipping!

Some insights that you might find helpful:

    1. Ask yourself this: who's going to use this app? If you narrow your target market to a niche and the expand you'll find more success.

For example: The app for people that want to read 1 book per week.

It's clear who the app is for and what it will do. Then you can expand to another niche. Just some food for thought.

    1. The illustrations on the right look off, as if they were floating there with no purpose. A friendly face would probably be better.

    2. Be your best self is a good headline, but it could be stronger. Try some variations, I am happy to give you feedback.

    3. Show me the product! The whole landing page is about what I will do in theory but I want to see how.

Hi Kho, thanks for taking the time to give me feedback! Agreed on picking a niche, I've been debating between keeping it broad and targeting B2B (companies for employee wellness programs, or gyms/trainers) or going B2C but picking a niche, and it's good to know your thoughts. Reading/meditating are two niches that seem most interesting on that front. Is there a particular niche you personally would find useful?

And agreed on all the feedback you gave on the landing page. I'll be making those changes soon.

      Thanks again!

      1. 1

I would fit on the reading niche which is why I mentioned it - there are really many niches, even the app for people that forget to floss daily could be a thing, you have to test things out. I highly recommend you read this book: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FLZKNUQ/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=UTF8&btkr=1

Hey Ishan, congrats on the launch!
One of the ideas that Potential works with is to connect with an "habit buddy", I really like that one. Maybe I'd highlight that, make it more prominent.

Regarding your question on exploring B2B, yes! I think it's worthy exploring those areas where the product has a lot of sense that can bring you several potential (pun intended) clients at once ;)

    Cheers!

    1. 1

Thanks for the feedback :) I definitely need to highlight both the habit buddy and charity payment aspects, as those are what make the app stand out. Really appreciate your thoughts!

    Congrats Ishan for the launch!

Hi, congrats on getting your MVP launched!

The value proposition isn't that clear to me. When you did customer research, what were the key features you identified as must-haves?

    1. 1

Thanks for your feedback! I hear you loud and clear - a couple of other folks also mentioned that the value proposition isn't coming through on the website, so definitely need to improve that.

  8. 1

I like the landing page, but I think it definitely needs some screenshots (or demo gif/video) of how the app works.

I'd also highlight the giving to charity if you fail - that's a cool idea and should be more prominent.

Also noticed that the graphic on the right doesn't seem to align with either the header or the top of the page. Not sure if this is intentional? https://sc.atymic.dev/f36586.png

    Good luck!

Totally agreed with @atymic. You can try something like this - http://www.flipdapp.co/

Thank you! Great points - definitely agreed on adding some screenshots, and highlighting the charity feature. And will fix the header bug. Thanks again :)

Hey, site looks great. There wasn't quite enough detail about how it actually works to make me install the app and give my email address etc. I love the concept though, it's very similar to a project I did which never got past the landing page stage called motimate.org.

    1. 1

I need motimate!! I'm trying to start my own product management freelance practice but doing it alone (as many of us are at IH) is tough!

      1. 1

I feel like Indiehackers is everything Motimate was supposed to be and more! But what would you want from Motimate if it existed?

        1. 1

That may be true! I am returning after a long time not being an indie hacker and I would essentially love to have little "standups" with my motimate where we set daily goals and keep each other accountable for what we said we would do. This is what I miss in my daily life when I'm independent.

To keep myself on track I create a list of 3 things that I absolutely need to get done the next day. I check them off throughout the day. If I do them, I make progress. if I don't do them, my progress is delayed. This would also be nice to share with a motimate buddy.

          1. 1

So one of the issues with the Motimate concept is that everyone works on different timelines and is motivated by different things. So you would need to be matched with someone who also wanted to set daily goals.

However you have spurred me on to build a version of Motimate and actually launch it!

I noticed on your profile you said you have loads of ideas but lack the skills to make them happen. I'm in exactly the same boat and it's been frustrating me for years. But I've just discovered the 'no code' movement and am really amazed at what's possible without coding skills now. Check it out if you can.

I'm setting myself a goal to launch a new project every month or two and see what works.

            1. 1

Hi Kieran, I was working on something similar as an offshoot of Potential, focusing on pairing people working on sideprojects etc. Would you be interested in jumping on a call to learn about each other's strengths and see if there's any interest in joining forces? Shoot me an email if you're interested - ishan2@gmail.com

            2. 1

This is a great initiative! Let me know when you've got a prototype - I'll be happy to check it out!

Right now digital lists are too overwhelming for me. I just use a sticky note (the really tiny kind) so things don't get too complicated.

    2. 1

Thanks, good point on having some more details on the landing page. Motimate.org looks really interesting! Any chance you'd be up for chatting about some of the challenges you faced building it? Would love your advice.

      1. 1

Yes that would be great! Send me a message and let's set a call up.

        1. 1

Is there a way to direct message on Indie Hackers? I'm not able to find it haha. Can you email me at ishan2@gmail.com when you get a chance. Would love to connect.

About

Found myself trying to build new habits but never quite sticking with them. Wanted to gamify the process by adding multiple incentives, to increase my chances of building long lasting habits.
