May 5, 2026 From side project to App Store: How I built an AI poker trainer that actually personalizes your training

Hey Indie Hackers 👋

I'm Juan, one of the founders of PreflopAI — an AI-powered

preflop trainer for poker players. I wanted to share the

story of how we got here.

The problem we kept seeing

Every serious poker player knows they should study preflop

ranges. The problem is how they study. Most tools just throw

random hands at you with no logic behind which spots you

actually need to work on. You spend an hour "studying" and

come away having practiced your strengths, not your leaks.

We kept seeing this in our own games and in the community.

Players with months of study time still making the same

positional mistakes because their training had no

intelligence behind it.

What we built

PreflopAI uses AI to analyze your decision patterns across

sessions, find your weakest spots by position and scenario,

and build personalized training sessions around them. Think

spaced repetition but for GTO poker ranges.

The core features:

- Solver-backed preflop charts for every position and

stack depth

- AI coach that identifies your specific leaks

- Separate training modes for cash games and tournaments

- Performance stats and playstyle profile

- Learning path inspired by Duolingo

The tech

React Native + Expo for the mobile app, Node.js on AWS for

the backend, Gemini 2.5 Flash for the AI layer, RevenueCat

for subscriptions. We're a small bootstrapped team — no

VC funding, no outside money.

Where we are now

Live on both App Store and Google Play. Free tier available,

premium subscription for unlimited training and full AI

features.

Would love to connect with anyone building in the mobile

app or EdTech space — happy to share what's worked and

what hasn't on the distribution side.

What's the hardest part of getting your first paying users

for a mobile app? That's our current focus and I'd love

to hear how others have approached it.

About

Most poker players study preflop charts for hours but keep making the same mistakes at the table. Existing training tools are just random hand quizzes — no intelligence, no personalization. I built PreflopAI to fix th
