August 2021 New feature: analysis & public page for developers

After talking to several startups & developers, we figured that our tool could be handy for them to evaluate and communicate their data protection, privacy, and security to new users.

As a small team, it's helpful to get an independent evaluation, benchmark your own data protection measures, share the analysis with users, and improve trust.

July 24, 2021 Finished building the MVP

We've coded the whole thing with some help from friends, freelancers, and StackOverflow.

The analytics platform is pretty stable. It's monitoring the privacy policies (with NLP), endpoint security, and social trust signals of more than 10K business apps!

That's exciting because 1. now I have this tool for myself (when I need to install a new extension for Chrome or an app for Gmail or Slack), and 2. other people can use it!

February 9, 2021 Came up with the idea

It's really true in our case - you should solve your own problem. During our time in a startup accelerator in LA, we were getting daily suggestions for new apps from other founders and advisors.

They solved practically everything - productivity, scheduling, collaboration, lead generation, sales, marketing.

Many of the apps asked for access to my Gmail, Calendar, Slack, or Zoom accounts. Which meant they would have access to all of my emails, contacts, calls, etc., which is sort of OK, but I wasn't comfortable with that (coming from the behavioral analytics space).

There should be a simple way to evaluate the privacy and security of a new app without pen-testing and going over their privacy policy, security documents, cookie policy, etc.

GDPR/CCPA statements are great, but often were a bit vague.

As it appears, there might be a way to make it better :)

About

1 - As an early adopter, trying out new tools raises concerns: are the servers secure? will they sell my data? 2 - As a maker - data privacy & security slows down adoption. We're fixing this transparency & trust gap.
