March 15, 2026 Why I’m building a leaner competitor to ImprovMX

Hey everyone,

I’ve spent over 35 years working with everything from Unix and Informix to firmware for the original iPods. After three decades in the trenches, I’ve learned one thing: Software usually starts great, then gets bloated, expensive, and corporate.

I saw this happening with the mail forwarding space. I’ve used ImprovMX for years, but lately, it feels like they’re shifting focus toward "enterprise" features and "value-based" pricing. For a guy like me with a portfolio of domains and side projects, I just wanted a fast, reliable utility that does one thing: forward my mail.

So, I decided to build it myself. It’s called RacterMX.

The "No-Fluff" Philosophy

I didn't want to build a "marketing platform." I wanted to build a dev-centric tool.

  • Pure Utility: No bloated dashboards or upsells. Just fast forwarding.

  • Privacy by Design: I’m a big believer in statelessness. I don't want to store your data; I just want to route it.

  • Built for Speed: Using my background in high-performance systems to ensure the latency is near-zero.

The Challenge

I’m currently at the stage where the plumbing is solid, and I’m refining the user experience. I’m an engineer by trade (I live in vi), so I’m forcing myself to focus on making the onboarding as seamless as the services that have ten times my funding.

My Question for the IH Community:

For those of you managing multiple domains for your SaaS projects, what is your biggest "deal-breaker" with your current mail setup? Is it the pricing, the lack of an API, or the fear of your mail being logged?

I’m bootstrapped and building this in public. I’d love for you to check out the landing page and tell me if the value proposition is clear: https://ractermx.com

Looking forward to the feedback (and the "don't build an email tool" warnings—I know, I know!).

I became disenchanted with the mail forwarding space. I wanted something built for people like me.
