Rafter & Framing Calc: BuildX

Construction Calculator for Tradespeople

August 13, 2026 I got tired of ugly, subscription-locked construction calculators — so I built my own

Every trade calculator app I found was either stuck in 2012 design-wise, or a decent tool buried behind a subscription for features that used to just be... the app.

I'm a solo iOS designer/developer, and I kept coming back to the same frustration: construction math (rafters, framing, stairs, board feet, concrete) is genuinely simple once you have the right tool, but every app I tried made it harder than it needed to be — decimal-only input when nobody on a jobsite thinks in decimals, cluttered UI, or a paywall for basic functionality.

So I built Rafter & Framing Calc: BuildX. Fraction-native input (type measurements the way lumber's actually marked), 15 tools in one app, and a one-time $24.99 purchase — no subscription.

It's live on the App Store now. Would genuinely love feedback, especially from anyone in construction/trades — does the fraction input actually feel natural, or am I missing something obvious about how people actually work?

The fraction-native input feels like the real differentiator here. I’d be curious whether that alone changes how quickly someone can use it on an actual jobsite.

Congrats on shipping — fraction-native input is such an underrated detail. Most calculator apps assume everyone converts to decimal in their head, and nobody on a jobsite actually does that. I build offline tools for a similar audience (plumbers/HVAC, not iOS but the same 'no subscription, works without signal' pitch) and it's wild how much trust that buys before someone even opens the app. Curious whether subscription fatigue was the objection you expected, or something else surprised you more?

About

I kept seeing trade calculator apps that were functional but ugly — never designed with real care. I wanted to build one with the same craft as any great consumer app, just aimed at jobsites instead of desks.
