August 30, 2026 Roofing quotes: same roof, different fine print. I built a tool to compare them.

A roofing quote can look reassuringly specific right up until it says "as needed."

Needed by whom? Included in which price? Excellent questions to ask before the roof comes off.

I'm building ReadMyBid, a free beta for U.S. homeowners who want to understand their roofing quotes before signing. You can check one quote, compare 2–3, or compare an original with a revised version. It flags missing or unclear scope, looks at exclusions, allowances and warranties, and suggests questions to ask the contractor.

The hardest part so far hasn't been making the AI sound confident. It's been getting it to stop sounding confident when the document isn't. "Not mentioned" isn't the same as "not included," and "replace as needed" isn't a promise to replace everything.

No quote handy? There's a sample comparison at https://readmybid.com — no account needed.

It's free during beta, with usage limits to keep AI costs manageable. Please remove personal details before uploading: documents go to an AI provider for analysis. Results can be wrong; this isn't a roof inspection or legal advice.

I'd love a blunt first impression: does the sample report make the next conversation with a contractor easier, or just give you another report to read? What would you cut?

Small update from this experiment: asking for a document upload was clearly too much friction for a first visit, so I added a no-upload 12-point roofing quote checklist. It runs entirely in the browser—no account, no AI call, and nothing is stored. https://readmybid.com/roofing-quote-checklist The checklist deliberately says “review this item” rather than calling unchecked items missing. I’m testing whether this lower-friction entry point helps homeowners understand the problem before they decide whether to upload a quote. If you try it, I’d value a blunt opinion: which item would you remove or add?
