March 27, 2026 I was a slow reader, so I built my own tool to fix that

I've always been a slow reader. Not because I don't enjoy reading — I actually read a lot. But I kept getting frustrated by how long it took me to get through technical PDFs and EPUBs.
I tried speed reading apps. Most were web-based, required an account, or only worked with one format. None of them felt like something I'd actually use every day. So about two months ago I started building Readshift.
It's a desktop reader with RSVP (words flash one at a time) and subvocalization reduction built in — the idea being that the main thing slowing most people down is silently "hearing" every word as they read. Eliminate that, and your speed goes up naturally.
The whole thing runs locally. No account, no cloud, no data going anywhere. PDF and EPUB in one app, WPM control, progress tracking. I built it with Tauri — my first real project with it. The learning curve was real but worth it. Version 1.0 is live today on itch.io as pay-what-you-want.
I'm genuinely curious if others have the same frustrations with existing reading tools — and what features would actually make a difference for you.
