Launched my side project

First off, awesome to finally be part of the open startup / build in public thing. Although this is just one person blogging about adding some code, it feels meaningful 😃

The problem: “My job is terrible”

I am a bean counter (accountant) by trade and I'm one of the lucky ones - I don't hate my job! Accountants have one of the lowest job satisfaction rates in the US. By talking with my peers over the years I'm not surprised - many are unhappy with their job, yet locked into it due to lifestyle creep.

Over the years it's clear there are three main reasons for the low job satisfaction:

  1. Face time
  2. Poor or outright mean superiors
  3. Lack of personal development options

It is my clear belief remote work solves for 1 and 2, and most of the time 3 as well from a better company culture more focused on doing things smarter.

The solution: A brand new thing

What I'm making has never been seen before! Especially not in the no-code world. It is a remote job board focused on bookkeepers and accountants.

This of course isn't groundbreaking but it's something that's deep within me. I want my friends and co-workers to have a better job and a better life.

Because accounting is fun! But terrible, 19th century workplaces often ruin the experience.

That's why I created Remotebee.

What I did

I built it! I spend the first two weeks building something in Bubble having a lot of fun along the way. As a no-coder it's incredible to have such an option.

It's still not easy and there is a significant learning curve but my gut tells me it's still a lot easier than:

Heroku and Firebase for hosting React and GSAP (for animations). Pretty standard to be honest (link).

The last two weeks of the month was spend seeding the board and I think I have a pretty good and efficient way to do that now.

In addition, I also set up integrations through Integromat to auto-post jobs to twitter and Facebook. Very happy I could figure that out 😃

Numbers, baby!

As any bean counter knows, numbers never lie.

So let's start with revenue:

See illustration.

Had there been any I'd be surprised!

Other numbers:

  • Unique users: 87 (+infinite %. Best growth rate I'll ever have 💪💪)
  • email subs: 16! (6 real, 9 friends and family lurkers, 1 me)
  • Time spent by me: 35 hours, 14 minutes, 17 seconds.

Tools and expenditures

Bubble: $29

Integromat: $9

Clockify: $5

Clockify: Free

Ads (FB and twitter): $132

The month ahead

A marketplace lives and dies with traffic. April will be focused on:

  • Seeding the job board
  • Content that will be inspired by the style of marketing examples
  • Cold outreach for promotion
  • Experiments with ads on different platforms

Goals for month

  • Get first non seeded job up (currently free)
  • Get to 100 email subs
  • Automate as much as possible!
