July 27, 2026 How would you monetize a free resume builder without a subscription trap?

I’m building ResumeQuill, a multilingual resume builder.

It is fully free right now: no account, no subscription, and users can download a PDF immediately.

Last week there were 642 PDF downloads. The site gets around 200–300 visitors a day. Revenue is still $0.

I’m now trying to figure out monetization without turning it into the usual resume-builder trap: a person spends 20 minutes filling in a CV and only then sees a recurring subscription.

The first option I’m considering:

  • Free PDF with a small ResumeQuill footer

  • $1 one-time payment to remove it

  • No subscription or automatic renewal

The other option is to keep the PDF completely free and charge for useful extras later: DOCX export, cover letters, or versions tailored to a job description.

What would you test first? Would a small footer be acceptable on a resume, or would you avoid it completely?

Most “free” resume builders put a paywall at download. I’m building a multilingual alternative and looking for a fair way to sustain it.
