Flexible Marketing Services for Founders and Marketing Teams
In early Summer 2023, I was back on the job market after an almost 6 year stint at a SaaS company.
The start up was an amazing experience where I was employee #6, was a solo marketer for the first 3 years, helped bring in millions of revenue with two sales reps, navigated through Series A and Series B, to then growing a team, and more.
Unfortunately, the job market in early 2023 through Summer had been pretty tough for tech and marketers. So while I was navigating my next move, I started doing fractional marketing consulting and advising for other SaaS companies.
I started considering going down the fractional marketing route as my next full-time gig since the job market was brutal and I started to build out a website and joining communities that help you get marketing work.
But around this time, I also noticed how subscription based services were growing in the design world. Think DesignJoy, Design Pickle, etc. I was starting to see this trickle into brand, product marketing, copywriting, and other areas as well.
I really was digging the model and was wondering how this could potentially apply to general fractional marketing or "Head of Marketing" work.
I know, I know it seems everyone is jumping onto this subscription model. But I think it's appealing for various reasons and can work well for most areas if you plan it out well.
Maybe it's a fad too, but I like the simplicity of the process and setup.
Anyway, I scrapped the first website and the general consulting idea.
And I started to explore this "productized" services (as it's often called) to differentiate myself (there are tons of marketing consultants/agencies out there following the same traditional contract playbook) and to make it easy for those to work with me (no contracts, subscribe for as long or as little as needed, cancel anytime, etc).
The challenge:
What broad areas of marketing can I focus on or do I really need to niche down even though I like the marketing generalist work? What types of subscription packages would make sense for founders or small marketing teams? How do I limit myself, to not take on too much and ensure quality of work is not impacted?
The scope of marketing work is a bit different compared to design or niching down to one specific area of marketing. So there was a bit of back and forth on my part, tons of notes, and conversations to try to refine as best I could.
I was offered a full-time job right around this time (June 2023), which I had a great offer and could not refuse. But I continued on to this marketing subscription services idea asa side project.
And the more I chatted with a few trusted folks in SaaS, the more I got hyped about it as everyone thought it was generally a great idea and something different in the industry.
After weeks of figuring out my target demographic, offerings, pricing and packages, copy, and wireframing the website -- it's finally live: https://revfoundry.com/
I'm sure I'll have some learnings and refinements as this gets out to more potential clients. And I'm currently only taking on limited work (already have 1 client grandfathered in, which is sweet!), as I do need to be mindful of my full-time work.
However, my goal is to make this my full-time opportunity in the future if things go well and I see a steady demand.
Excited to see where this goes (:
