Probably nothing but glad that people beside me ARE actually using it. And, according to mailgun stats, pretty extensively. Even got a feature request: add SMS alerts. Not doing any active marketing though, need to polish it some more, especially app frontend.

December 2021 All systems go!

rsi-alerts.com officially launched and started to get it's first users! Another thing I learned while working on this project is the power of good habits. Atomic Habits book blew away my mind and rsi-alerts.com is probably the direct result of it. Spending around 25 minutes a day, every day on a relatively project helped me build and launch it in "just" 6 months. 25 minutes! Who could have thought?

November 16, 2021 Making sure it can be free

rsi-alerts.com is really a good tool for long-term investors. Who are not buying or selling stocks constantly and need a very good reason to do so at all, aiming at 5-10-15 years ahead. As I've mentioned before, paying a monthly fee for 10 years does not make any sense and I wanted to make a tool available for those people too. Of course, it's impossible to do without any limits at all but for a time I had no idea how to make it free even with some limitations. Financial APIs cost money and to calculate RSI for yourself you need a lot of space and computing power, which you will run out of eventually. So, how do I get RSI data?

This is when I found out about alphatournament.com. Yes, it's a child project of AlphaVantage API, the very API I used to get RSI data. The problem was that free API keys have limitations and I wanted to test the idea of having an almost completely risk-free project. Turned out that you can lift some of the restrictions from AlphaVantage API keys, lifting 500-requests-per-day limit. All you have to do is mine and hold some AVC tokens, which is not a big deal at all. In fact, you can get 250 AVC tokens just by registering at https://www.alphatournament.com using my referral code: ZZCCQH. It's enough to lift API restrictions.

There it is! Enough API calls to provide RSI alerts indefinitely for unlimited number of users if they won't track more than 25 stocks each. To be honest, you probably shouldn't have more stocks in your portfolio anyway.

I plan to switch to paid API soon anyway to be able to track any number stocks per users (PRO accounts) but that's another story already.

October 19, 2021 Got my head around lifting State up in React.js

This appeared to be the main principle around whole frontend of my app. All the key info is stored in parent component State but can be influenced by it's children's State. This was the first React.js project that I built from scratch so took some time to understand this simple principle. Which is actually not that hard at all if not for official React.js docs making it look really complicated :)

April 3, 2021 First commit, wohoo!

Spent quite a lot of time deciding how exactly I want to build this but eventually picked old & trusted WordPress as a framework and React.Js as a frontend solution. Whole app was packed in a WordPress plugin with Composer & Webpack.

At that time I haven't got a clue about how much code it would actually need to write and planned to finish the whole thing in a month's time.

wp_remote_get was getting what I needed from https://www.alphavantage.co and that was enough for me at that time :)

December 2019 How do I track my RSI?

Having started building my investment portfolio a couple of years ago I found that there are hundreds of apps that are supposed to solve all kind of problems for investors... for a monthly fee :) That didn't seem right, especially if one aims for long-term investment strategies. Even $5 a month can build up to a considerable sum in 10-15 years and most of the financial apps charge a lot more than that. Especially when it comes to trading indicators, like RSI.

And I needed RSI for my simple investment strategy. Which is: invest a fixed amount of money every month, buying the same list high-conviction stocks. But with a list of over 80 stocks you really need a way of choosing what stock to buy or sell this month. This is where RSI comes into play. It's a simple indicator that tells whether a stock is "oversold" (and it's probably a good idea to increase your position) or "overbought" (think about taking some profits). Of course, it's not 100% reliable but proved to be a very good starting point.

And since no other services provided this kind of alerts for free or at least for a reasonable money, I decided to build it myself and learn something new while doing so.

About

RSI is a valuable metric that helps me choose the best prices to decrease/increase my investment positions. There were no free tools that allowed me to track more than 3-5 tickers so I created one myself.
