February 14, 2024 The easiest way to check Gemfile for security issues.

Yesterday I published a new blog post about my free tool called Gemfilecheck. It enables you to upload your Gemfile.lock for your project, and quickly check for outdated gems and other security issues.

I've got the idea of creating such a tool because I need this kind of tool myself whenever I come to a new project. As they say, I eat my own dogfood.

February 14, 2024 My first paying customer

Today is a great day. The first customer decided to subscribe to my service. Which validates my hypothesis. There are people running Ruby websites and applications, that do not need a full-time developer. Or even more important businesses whose profits do not warrant hiring full-time developers. Ruby Mule is an agency that definitely saves you money.

Congrats! Your business model is quite interesting - we're building something similar (in the data engineering + data science development) but no free tier. I think that might be a good way for us to grab clients. Might have to take that idea ;)

One thing though - we are taking a shot at it at a request basis rather than hourly. I'm assuming at your higher tiers you would be hiring developers to handle the high hours?

Yes, correct. When it comes to hourly-based pricing, I think you are right. It is better to come up with something different than to base your pricing on hours worked. But for me issue was that people in this niche are so used to being billed based on hours, that it was hard for me to break that convention.

I think you should definitely go for the free tier. It gives people the opportunity to try your service easily, but also gives you appreciation and some very good word-of-mouth marketing. In the end, all this might be worth more than what you would be able to charge for in that small free tier.

Most people are feared and scared to offer something for free. Their main concern is that there will be an influx of people flooding their inboxes. Which is not true. For specialized services like yours, it requires specific customers to even need your service in the first place. It is not like random people on the Internet will over sudden decide they need some data engineering work done for free when they see your offer. Contrary to these fears, this way you would be able to target your audience with extremely high precision.

February 1, 2024 I will work for free on your Ruby project

Ok, so finally I figured out how to meet the opposing requirements of doing what you love, with having a business. I always knew programming Ruby is what I love. In the past, I had clients I even worked for free. And I never had a problem with it.

That's how I came up with the idea for Ruby Mule. I will offer a decent amount of my time for free(up to 5 hours a month). 5 hours should be enough to cover the basic needs of a project. Fix some bugs, and add some smaller features. Keep the project updated, etc.. People who need more time can buy some of the bigger packages.

This way I can do what I love, and still make a living.
