Your Data. Your Server. Your Rules.
RunFreeApps.com — I built a self-hosting platform for people who have no idea what self-hosting is.
Here's the honest pitch for this community: you don't need this. You could set up n8n, NocoDB, and Outline on a $6 Droplet yourself in an afternoon. You know what Docker is. You've used SSH. This post isn't for you, it's about you understanding why someone built it anyway.
The market gap
The person paying $580/month across Notion, Airtable, Zapier, and Mailchimp isn't a developer. They're a 35-year-old agency owner running a 10-person team who has heard of self-hosting exactly once, from a Reddit comment, and assumed it required hiring someone like you.
That's the actual customer. Not the developer who could do it themselves. The person who has the budget problem but not the technical skillset to solve it.
What it does
Connect a DigitalOcean account. Pick from 90+ open-source apps. Click deploy. Done in under 5 minutes. No terminal. No YAML. No Docker knowledge. The platform handles provisioning, SSL, databases, Nginx, firewalls; the entire stack without the user ever seeing a config file.
There's also an AI Deployment Advisor: describe what you want to build in plain English, and it recommends and deploys the right apps automatically. A non-technical founder typing "I need something to replace Mailchimp" gets Listmonk deployed to their own server. They never knew Listmonk existed.
Why developers aren't the target
Developers self-host because they want to. They enjoy the control. The configuration is part of the point. RunFreeApps removes all of that, which is precisely why a developer would find it boring and why a business owner finds it essential.
The insight: there are millions of small businesses paying per-user SaaS pricing who would immediately switch to self-hosted alternatives if the barrier to entry were a button instead of a terminal.
The honest tension
The irony of building this is that your early adopters and evangelists are always developers. They get it immediately. But they're not writing the check you need, the agency owner is. Getting from developer enthusiasm to business-owner adoption is the real product challenge, not the technical one.
We're at ~20 active deployments. Growth comes almost entirely from people who found us through "alternatives to Notion/Airtable/Zapier" searches, not from Hacker News or IndieHackers. Which tells you something about where the actual market is.
Built with Anything.com for the initial scaffold, Claude Code for production hardening, and running on DigitalOcean. Happy to talk shop on any of those decisions.
Why Anything.com? To get to a working scaffold fast enough to validate before over-engineering it, then Claude Code to harden the parts that actually needed to be right.

About
The open-source community has built world-class software that can replace almost every expensive, proprietary SaaS tool on the market. But right now, there is a massive engineering barrier, we solved that problem.
