August 27, 2021 150,000+ listed products

SaaSHub has been growing in all directions for the last several months. One of these directions is the number of new products submitted to the marketplace -150,034 as of now. If you checks the timeline here on IH, you can see that my previous similar report was for 100k products in Dec 2019. That's about 83 new products listed on average every day (based on a quick and imprecise calculation).

While that number might not be stunning for some investors, I'm proud of it given that it's a one-man-army show. What is more, I've been told (by an investor) that SaaSHub is starting to make some of the leaders in the space (like Capterra & G2) a bit uneasy 🙈.

What is more, I've been told (by an investor) that SaaSHub is starting to make some of the leaders in the space (like Capterra & G2) a bit uneasy at night.

I suspect you have been misinformed. Happy to talk privately about business models.

    Three pieces of advice:

    1. Never describe yourself as "a one-man-army show." Your customers, the ones paying you, do not care at all. To the extent they do care it will scare the crap out of them.
    2. Don't focus on making your competitors uneasy, focus on providing value to your customers (the companies who are paying you).
    3. Don't focus on the number of products you have collected under you tent but the number of new customers who are happy with the tools they found after browsing your site.

      Thanks @skmurphy! 🙇

Yup, my focus is definitely providing value to both SaaSHub's customers and normal users using the platform. In that regard, having the most objective lists with alternatives is definitely amongst the top priorities. That's one of the reasons why there are no affiliate listings, too.

      1. 1

I love SaaSHub. I used it before I knew it was made by an Indie hacker. I love that it is a one man army and that you can't tell by browsing it. One would think it is a company who made it. Too bad you stopped sharing stats at /open !

        1. 2

Thanks @micadep. I just stopped believing it's that much valuable (to me/SaaSHub) sharing the stats.

November 7, 2020 $2,4k in October (25% growth)

With a few days of delay, we have the "Open Startup" stats of SaaSHub for October https://www.saashub.com/open

Monthly revenue: $2,376 - 25% growth (20% of goal).
Monthly page-views: 530k - 3% growth

Last month's revenue growth was 16%, so I'd consider October as a good month. I don't anticipate sustaining a 25% growth in the long run, however, should it happen, I'd reach my goal in only 9 months.

That is a lot of traffic, congrats! With that much traffic, your revenue can only go up.

    1. 1

Monetization is more difficult than expected though.

  2. 2

    Cool!
    What's your business model?

      1. 1

        Thanks, and good luck!

  3. 2

    Congrats Stan!

Quite a few of my clients are not listed here so, I'll ensure it's mentioned on my calls next week.

    1. 1

      Thanks, mate. Appreciated!

  4. 1

Wow that is a ton of traffic.

October 7, 2020 Runnaroo integration (a DuckDuckGo alternative)

runnaroo-and-saashub

Excitingly, I'd like to share that SaaSHub's public API has its first integration - Runnaroo up and running. It's a new privacy orientated search engine. I'd say it's an alternative to Google and a direct competitor of DuckDuckGo.

Now, when you prefix your search on Runnaroo with "related:", the results will be provided by SaaSHub. With this in place, this new search engine can provide better results than both Google and DuckDuckGo. For example, you could check the top related results for "Indie Hackers" https://www.runnaroo.com/search?term=related%3A+indie+hackers.

It is still a very young search engine, yet it is a perfect example of how one can use SaaSHub's API.

Awesome! Thank you Stan. The SaasHub API is intuitive and extremely easy to use.

In addition to the 'related' utility powered by SaaSHub, some other ones are below:

    code:
    ex. https://www.runnaroo.com/search?term=code%3A+Backbone.Collection.extend

    hn:
    ex. https://www.runnaroo.com/search?term=hn%3A+saashub

    subdomains:
    ex. https://www.runnaroo.com/search?term=subdomains%3A+cnn.com

    alexa:
    ex. https://www.runnaroo.com/search?term=alexa%3A+indiehackers.com

I probably should document these somewhere!

October 1, 2020 Open Startup October update

Hey mates, I've update the "Open Startup" stats of SaaSHub https://www.saashub.com/open

Monthly revenue: $1,896 - 16% growth (and 16% of goal).
Monthly page-views: 513k - 9% growth

If this growth continues, I will reach my goal in 14 months... yet, there won't be growth every month. Time will tell.

Wondering about the traffic, is it 99% search? From my analysis of every-review-directory-like-site, the main acquisition source is Google.

Where do you make all the money from, sponsorships or featured products?

    1. 1

September 30, 2020 Public API

I'd like to announce that SaaSHub has a simple public API now. There are two endpoints as of now. In general, that should be sufficient for some basic integrations; however, the API could be extended in the future.

The API is free and, all you need is a SaaSHub user account.

In essence, you can get all the alternatives to a given product through a simple GET query https://www.saashub.com/api/alternatives/__query__?api_key=__your_api_key__

You can find the relevant docs here https://www.saashub.com/site/api

If you decide to use the API and need any help or have an idea how to improve it, please don't hesitate to ping me. Thanks!

What was the reasoning putting your api key passed in via a query parameter instead of headers?

    1. 1

      It's a touch easier.

  2. 2

Congrats! Did you find any gotchas when building a public API?

    1. 1

I wouldn't say. Given that I already have an "internal API" used for some of UI functionality and that the backend is in Ruby on Rails - it was straightforward. A few hours job.

September 11, 2020 SaaSHub is joining the #openstartup movement

I've decided to join the #openstartup movement with SaaSHub/open. Let's see how it goes.

The details I've disclosed so far are:

  • Current monthly revenue + goal
  • Page views as reported by Google Analytics
  • Monthly product views
  • Monthly product referrals

This is amazing. I created a openstartup directory, is it okay to add your startup to the list?

    1. 1

Sure thing. I’d be happy if you add it.

  2. 1

Hey Stan, that is amazing! Does this include affiliate revenue from product referrals to their official sites?

    1. 2

There are no affiliates. I don't do any affiliates.

  3. 1

    Nice!
I wonder how you implement showing metrics.

    1. 1

Which metrics? I will be updating the revenue and Google Analytics pageviews manually on monthly basis. The rest is extracted directly from the database and cached for 1 day.

      1. 1

I was asking about the charts you show like new products, referrals. I wondered if you use some real-time data for showing, and which library or whatever you used for showing charts. Thanks!

        1. 1

I'm using https://www.chartjs.org/ for that. It's very simple and does the job.

December 28, 2019 A competitor verified their product on SaaSHub

This isn't something huge, but for some indescribable reason, I've always waited the moment when a competitor would verify their product on SaaSHub. And that just happened an hour ago. It's the "The Google Cemetery" in this particular case. It's a direct competitor to the Google Graveyard I've built as a feature of SaaSHub.

The next competitors I'd love to see verified on SaaSHub are:

BetaList as a competitor to the SaaS Tribune

G2 & AlternativeTo as direct competitors

Hey! I previously read about SaaSHUB early this year, glad I get to see it again and I just listed my SaaS https://www.dongocrm.com/ -- currently waiting for it to get approved, thank you!

  2. 2

    Hi Stan,

    Congratulations!

Also, I tried adding Snap Search (https://snapsearch.online) as alternatives to DDG and Brave, but encountered an http 500 error - thought i'd let you know 🙂

    1. 1

Thanks for the notice, @cybersky. There had been an issue with a duplicate name, and duplicate names are not allowed on SaaSHub. I'm aware that might be an issue long term.

Here it is Snap Search https://www.saashub.com/snap-search-app-alternatives. You can verify it now. There was a name-collision with https://www.saashub.com/snapsearch

      1. 1

Ahh thanks for that. Have verified it 🙂

  3. 2

Thanks for SaaSHub, I just submitted my product (https://remoteleaf.com). Now waiting for the approval!

    1. 1

Approved. Remote Leaf seems polished. I will also get it featured on the homepage on the 14th of Jan (for 2 days). Hopefully that will bring you a few more users.

      1. 1

Wow, that's awesome. Thank you so much!

December 17, 2019 Product verification by a meta tag

SaaSHub supports product verification through the inclusion of a simple "meta" tag on your website now. This is kind of a small feature, yet it will save time and reduce support requests.

Until recently, the way to verify a product on SaaSHub was by providing an email from the same domain. That works very well in most of the cases but not always.

Apparently, many people don't have email addresses from the domain of their side-project or even their business. Setting up email servers or configuring a paid one could be either expensive or time-consuming, and people just don't do it and use alternative email addresses.

As of now, you can add a simple "meta" tag to your website's HEAD section, click a button, and verify that you have access to that product. Hopefully, this will increase the number of newly verified products. The average number of verifications for the last month's been ~ 150/week. I can see that number going up to ~200 in Jan & Feb 2020.

Thanks for taking the time to follow my path of growing SaaSHub.

December 2, 2019 100,000+ Products

SaaS Tribune

I reported that there were 77,686 approved products exactly 2 months ago. As of now, I can share that that number is 100,086. Apart from the number of new products, there have been many other improvements:

  • New logo (that I believe looks better and more professional)
  • A new version of the SaaS Tribune giving focus on new and cool start-ups every day (i.e. this feature is making SaaSHub a direct competitor to BetaList & BetaPage)
  • A weekly newsletter featuring some of the top products from the SaaS Tribune
  • The approval process (newly submitted products & reviews)
  • Better reviews support + a dedicated reviews page per product
  • Upgraded the back-end to the latest version of Ruby on Rails ✨
  • Stopped accepting reviews and registrations from disposable email addresses.
  • Three recurring customers promoting their products

So what's next? Well, apart from the endless list of ideas for small improvements, I will be putting constant effort into improving the quality of lists with alternatives. The end goal is SaaSHub to be the best website where you can find the top and most objectively correct alternatives of any software product.

In the end, if you are building a software product, it's free to submit and verify it on SaaSHub. If it has a modern look and seems useful, I'd be happy to feature it on the SaaS Tribune.

Cheers!

    That’s a lot of SaaS!

For your newsletter, it’s not immediately obvious that you have one or where to signup. I’m on mobile and had to scroll maybe 2/3 of the way down before I saw an opt in.

If growing your email list is important (should be) then you might want to have an opt in much higher up the page.

    1. 1

Thanks, mate! It hasn't been that important. Maybe it should be. I introduced that just last week. Lot's of room for improvements.

  2. 2

Ooooh I love what you're working on here. I think it makes a lot of sense for us to connect & chat about the SaaS landscape and how SaaSHub and Saasify could potentially work together in the future.

    Cheers 😄

    1. 1

Nice idea with Saasify. Yes, we could potentially work together.

  3. 2

As I needed a little break from a very long feature I'm working on, I played with building a repository of saas services. Since there are many of those, I thought that a nice differentiator would be to allow makers share their stack, so you'd get to see how many products are using other products, and that can help rate them higher.
I always like thise posts in IH about what services others are using, I think it has a lot of value.
I eventually let it go and got back to form-data.com, so here's an idea for you, if you want :)

    1. 1

Yes, that's something that's in my todo list already. It will potentially happen.

  4. 1

100k! How do you go about adding them all in?

November 19, 2019 10,000 page views in a day

Google Analytics graph

OK, SaaSHub had 10,000 page views yesterday. This may not seem much to many, but it is a big milestone for me. To be honest, I'm not sure what's the exact reason behind the growth for the last 2 weeks; however, the fact is that rankings on Google have increased. I've done a number of small changes here and there and any of them might be the "culprit".

The two most significant changes are:

  1. page titles have been renamed from "Top 12 Product Name Alternatives" to "Best Product Name Alternatives".

  2. I've removed the "nofollow" tag from a lot of links pointing to relevant external articles.

I have a feeling that the second change could be it. So many websites are using "nofollow" links only and everywhere, that Google may have started giving preference to sites with regular links. Of course, that's just a theory that I can't prove. Anyways, if you think that makes sense, you may consider giving a go to a similar strategy.

And again, if you are working on a cool new software-related startup, please, don't hesitate to submit it to SaaSHub.

p.s. I'd have loved being able to post an image along the status update / ping @channingallen

@harrydry gave a good explanation early this morning. Here you go (the third green arrow in the image below points to the syntax for Markdown images):

Indie Hackers uses Markdown in posts. So for example, The Nike Story I posted looks like this in edit mode =>

Thanks! Yes, that's how I added the image. I just expected to be able to upload it right along the post. Anyways, I know what to do now.

  2. 2

Congrats on the latest milestone @StanBright . I'm working on analysing 400+ SAAS pricing pages and publishing the analysis sometime in December. It'll be just a website with the stats (resource) for SAAS founders to fine-tune their pricing and pricing page UX.

Would it be a good fit to publish on your website? It's not a software but rather just a resource.

    1. 1

Sure thing . It'd be a good fit. When submitting your website, please, identify SaaS Pages as a competitor.

  3. 2

👏 Congratulations mate! To another 10k!!
