Save stuff for later via Calendar events

July 7, 2019 Pocket + Calendar = ♥️ (MVP)

Hey fellow hackers! Just finished my first MVP of sorts and really want to show it to someone.

It's a read-it-later app that helps you to save all kinds of content (articles, videos, SoundCloud records, products, you name it) for later.

But unlike apps like Pocket it doesn't just produce a list of 500 items you'll never get back to. Instead for each item you create a calendar event. It makes you think about when you will read "that article" and whether you actually have time to do it.

It's a proof of concept for now a PWA (progressive web app) so it works only on Android with Google Chrome. But if that's what you use please try it. I would love to hear your feedback.

    I'm loving the concept!

Some time ago I built something similar for myself: every few days a script fetches a few random articles from Pocket, marks them as read, and sends them to my email address. So that way bit by bit I can clean my Pocket inbox. You might use that idea for your app :-)

Nice! Did you manage to declutter your Pocket that way?

Only partially. I stopped using it after a few weeks since I realized that I set a wrong goal. There is an infinite amount of information and only a finite amount of time. You can't read every interesting article you stumble upon. Instead, I started treating my Pocket inbox just as another (infinite) information feed. I scroll it through when I have spare time and read articles that seem interesting to me without fear of missing something important out.

It would be great if the app could spread the reads across the year (based on the lengths of the materials). I use Pocket as "read later" silo: everything goes there, and it piles up... It would probably be convenient to have the auto-generated reading plan built based. 'Zero pocket' state could be the goal.

I've been thinking about Zero Pocket as well, it was kind of the logical next step after this one for me. Awesome you mentioned it, I'll definetely explore that now!

About

My Pocket is filled with hundreds of articles saved for later. But later is never. And when it's in my calendar it has a far greater chance of being noticed.
