August 30, 2026 I built a free tool for the awkward “one quick thing” client request

cope creep rarely arrives as “I’d like to pay you for some extra work.”

It usually sounds more like:

“While you’re in there, could you also…”
“This should only take a minute…”
“I assumed that was included.”

The difficult part isn’t always recognizing that the request may be outside scope. It’s responding clearly without sounding defensive or damaging the client relationship.

So I built Scope Creep Defender.

It helps freelancers and consultants review a new client request against the agreed scope, identify possible scope creep, and draft a professional change-order or boundary response.

It’s free and requires no login.

I built it as part of the codeofwhisper Agent Hub, where I’m experimenting with small tools that solve very specific operational problems.

I’d especially love feedback from freelancers and consultants:

Where does the line between a reasonable revision and scope creep become difficult for you?

The “respond without damaging the client relationship” part feels like the harder problem than identifying scope creep. Curious whether users mainly struggle to recognize when a request crosses the line, or to actually push back once they know it does.

I think you’re right that pushing back is often the harder part. A lot of freelancers already have that gut feeling that a request is outside scope, but turning that into a clear response without sounding defensive is where it gets awkward.

That’s why I didn’t want the tool to stop at “yes, this looks like scope creep.” The classification matters, but the useful part is helping turn that judgment into something professional you can actually send.

I can see why that distinction matters. Happy to continue the conversation privately if useful — what’s the best email to reach you on?

About

Scope creep often starts with “one quick thing” and ends in unpaid work. I built Scope Creep Defender to help freelancers spot when a request goes beyond scope and turn it into a clear, professional change order.
