Scout

Keyword monitoring for Reddit

Visit Website
April 25, 2022 Hello world

This week marks the beginning of work on my new tool, Scout. Right now my primary focus is to validate the idea by driving traffic to the landing page and seeing how many users sign up for the mailing list. My next step will be beginning the MVP, once I think the idea is validated!

This is great! I currently use F5Bot.com to monitor reddit and hacker news for specific mention of keywords that relate to my website. F5Bot can only do so much so I'm excited to see how Scout grows. How do you plan to monetize your idea?

Can you elaborate on how you use F5Bot? Are you tracking keywords and then manually reaching out to prospects? I would love to speak with you further on what features you think it's lacking.

I plan to charge a modest monthly subscription fee. There will be a free trial, I'm not sure about full-blown freemium.

Awesome. I'll definitely keep an eye on the project.

My use of F5Bot is pretty a manually. But I think thats how it has to be. I think - for lack of a more positive word - shilling requires a manual touch. It's hard to automate it without being downvoted into oblivion on most sites. `Which, is totally understandable.

I basically think of phrases that present the opportunity for me to plug my website (the comment section of reddit is more forgiving than trying to show people stuff with posts). My website is a city based aggregator (interesting articles, food, drinks, things to do, real estate). So, for example, I have an alert on "things to do in los angeles".

        Cons of f5bot:

        1. sometimes slow - I got a notification to a thread yesterday that was many hours old, but it would have been great if I could have responded within the first few minutes of it being up

        2. the ability to monitor beyond reddit. It would be great to have a tool where you could use sets of phrases with sets of websites.

        3. Not always smart enough to filter out nonsense.

The point of software businesses is to have something that you can forget about ( a little ) one day and still makes you money, but I think the next step in this particular niche is automation + a manual internet-savvy team that can help plug your business with as much tact as possible. Thats the real hard part - not making people angry when you are trying to show them your product.

Great insights, thanks for taking them time to share them with me.

I totally agree about toeing the line between helpful and spammy on Reddit. I think going via DM is one other way to combat this, but obviously that won't get the same reach as a comment on a post.

I love a simple and well focused product. One idea, clean execution, clean message - well done! What kind of stage are you at right now? Are you looking for users or just building for now?

About

I'm creating Scout primarily to scratch my own itch. I'd like to be able to monitor posts and comments about certain topics on Reddit. Right now I'm doing this in a semi-manual fashion, and I'd like to automate it.
